With the company Explorer Micro, there is an offer for an integrated Duron 1200+ pc for only $249. To me this sounds like a real bargain, but I may be wrong here.

The link is: Integrated Duron 1200+ for only $249.

Given specs are:
===============
Integrated Duron, Athlon, & XP .. (- --- Add Modem --- -) (10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet NIC) (N01 - 104 Key Windows Keyboard) (O01 - 2 Button High Resolution Mouse) (I09 - 20 Gig UDMA Hard Drive -5400rpm) (L01 - 3.5 inch Mitsumi Floppy Drive) (K52 - 50x CD-ROM) (D10 - 64 Meg 133MHz SDRAM) (64MB (Max Shared Vid)(B_60 & B_28 ONLY)) (C38 - AMD Duron 1200+MHz CPU) (A51 - ATX Mid Tower-Grey (2)5.25 (3)3.5) (B60 - ECS K7SEM Socket A (10/100,Sound,SDRAM ONLY))
===============

Might be a good addition to some sort of cluster, since they have an ethernet card included. ;)

Sounds like a good price. :)

Anyone have experience with this Asus MB?

supports up to XP2000 with On board LAN, vid, audio for $49.00 I don't know if that's a good price for it or not.

They also have XP2000 systems for $299.00 (without HD)

I think I saw this in the Hot Deals forum, someone mentioned that it's actually a Celeron 800 o/c'ed and remarked to 1200. Generally the feedback was bad on these. Let me see if I can find the thread...

It is possible that it is an o/c'ed proc. :D
What I fail to see is how they can make an AMD proc into a Celeron from Intel. ;)

I had a link for this at one time too, and it is a duron, but SA was right, the true clock speed is 800 or 900, I will see if I can find a link...

I had the motherboard and soldered on chip with a sticker that said warranty void if removed on the heatsink latches.

I tested it and it crunched at a seti rate comparable to a P-3 800.
I returned it.
The K7SEM supports AMD and it was on the outside of the box marked as 850 Duron. There is no 1200 Duron so it had to be overclocked.
The Bios comes up and clames it to be a 1200 plus.
I was running on a hacked linux seti program so I couldn't get any other meaningful information.
In the BIOS there was no adjustable settings. I just put in PC-133 memory (I don't recall if I even have any PC-100 memory I could have put in...)
The board has on board video. I don't recall if the memory for the video came from the RAM.

After all these remarks, it doesn't seem to be such a bargain as it sounds. ;)

Hehe D1vine,
Whenever I come across such a (seem-to-be) bargain, I tell it here, so our members can expand their farms relatively cheap. :D

Am a proud TA-member since 1999 and most of the oldies know me around here. ;)
Am also a Federation-miniteam member and feel happy about that also. :p

Divine,
Team Anandtech members usually post good deals here, primarily for those who are interested in upgrading, or building crack racks. A lot of times they give teammates first "crack" at stuff they're selling, as the equipment will be used to further the individual and team output.

:D

I'll vouch for PeterN, stand up guy and long time member of the team. :D He's just not a nef. ;)

Yeah i figured as mcuh after i read the last part of his post

"Might be a good addition to some sort of cluster."

...felt like a total moron after that :)

Anyways...try not to pay too much attention to me yet. I'm still fairly newbiefied on these boards.

No prob, D1vine. Every member is entitled to making mistakes here, as long as these are not taken personal and cleared up before it becomes a big issue. :p

And believe me, we have had some of those big issues in the (glad to say) far past. ;)

My personal posting to you was to introduce me to you, in a way. :D
I didn't take it personally, so no harm done there.

BTW, I think I wasn't here when everyone else welcomed you, so:

WELCOME to the best DC-team in the world.
We may not be the #1 in the projects, but these guys stand up for eachother.
They feel like family, despite the fact this team is scattered all over the world (from the Americas to Europe and from Asia to Russia).
Now, we have to find our first extraterrestrial lunatic, that is crazy enough to join us (but we are working on this one ;) ).

Ray,
I have a feeling you are trying to provoke me? ;)

Want me to n*f?

Will try, but my keyboard is still unwilling to make the N.E.F. combination. :D

It constantly changes the 'e' in an '*'. :p

nEf (hehe, I fooled it, now i can nEf nEf).

:D:D:D:D:D:D

And Ray,
It will take me a long time before I can even think of getting into your nEffing-range, looking at the # of postings you have made. :p:p:p

Definitely feels good to be a new part of the team. Leaving work early today to go home and setup my SETI configurations and get pumping ;)

The more i look over their (Explorer Micro) deals, the more i'm cautious towards it.
That coupled with the comments here.... :disgust:
Seems like a decent bargain until you research it a little bit.

hehe, Ray

I'm always cautious of that deadly cane you're carrying with you. :p:p

And D1vine,
Good to see you're hooked on Seti that soon already.
Promises something good for the future. ;)

hehe.

Got my Seti config working at home...
Before i left work I modified some stuff and got it through the firewall so i'm crunching numbers from my work machines as well.

I need a few more machines running at home and i'll have a nice little cluster going.

Just be careful with work machines. You should really get full permission (written is preferable) before doing it, as there have been cases of people getting sued/fired because of it (our very own Dave McOwen is a prime example). We don't want anyone losing their jobs because of any DC project.

But, welcome to the TeAm, i hope you stick around :)

Thats a good point. I'm running it currectly only on one machine. The 's' was a typo. I got the OK from for it..just on my workstation. Not hurting anything.
My roommate and I have decided to start a mini beowulf project at our place. Let the crunching begin ;)
