ok, so im building my second rig...yay, the first one is tight! anyways, im building one that i will sell to my dad. he wants to do audio capturing and listening. i have put together a few scenarios that i believe will make his comp rock solid, fast, and quiet. just wondering what you all thought preformance wise, and also how intel would do over amd. (try not to be biased towards amd unless you have good reason to do so)

ok, so this is what im thinking:

*sound card - working this one out, not an issue at the time

* Video card - cheapest one that i can find without a fan that will still run well (2d 3d, is one better for audio work??)

*Ram - x2 256mb micron 2100

*case - dirt cheap one

*Hd noise damper

*CPU - AMD 1700+ or 2100+

*Mobo - unceartian

*Fans - panaflow

*HD - seagate barracuda w/fdb 5400 rpm 2mb or 8mb cache (5400rpm only because of the noise damper surrounding it)

*CD/RW - some 52x24x52 prob, they are dirt cheap nowadays

*PS - zalman quiet PS

*HS - zalman CNPS7000-alcu (heard good things about this one)

ok, that sounds like all of it...cost is a HUGE issue, so thats why im thinking amd, but preformance is also a large issue, so if intel will give me a big boost it may be worth the money...if not, meh. anything else you think would be helpful, thanks a bunch.

I'd say the 2100 is a steal.

If you need decent video/network/sound the only way to go is the Nforce 2 420 IGP. Buy the MSI board. It has the origonal NForce 2 audio along with video, network, USB 2.0 and I think maybe firewire. Unfortunatley, I doubt you're heatsink will work on this board due to tthe lack of mounting holes. Does your board use mounting holes?

It might be better to get a 2100+, Something like an SK6, an 80MM to 60MM fan adapter then mount this on it. It's technically the quietest fan in the world and while it won't provide a whole lot of air to the CPU, it should be enough to keep it under 60C. The reason why the Zalman might not work so well is the motherboard I suggested technically has no mounting holes and thus it would be hard to get the heatsink on there. ;)

Infact, I reccomend that fan so highly i'd reccomend redoing all the case fans with this fan. It's just so quiet. Technically it's almost 2X as quiet as the Panaflo. 12db vs 21db.

You're making a terrible mistake going with the 5400RPM harddrive, I strongly reccomend the Seagate Baracuda IV. It's almost as quiet as most 5400RPM harddrives! Trust me, this thing is dead silent. Any reasonably loud (even intel stock) heatsink fan will drown it out.

So that knocks out your motherboard, video, heatsink/fan, case fan, audio and CPU choices. Hope i've been of some help.

Bah, weren't you reading properly? The rig's for audio, why would he need good speakers? :p

But he might want to mention them anyway.

the speaker system is already set up. he has a massive speaker system integrated into the room in which the computer it will be, thats why its not an issue.

Don't get a crappy case, Antec has a line which is supposed to be well insulated to reduce any noise. That in conjunction with your already quiet components should be perfect. I would stray away from any cases with large open spaces in the front like the 1040.
