Okay I just installed Debian onto my laptop, however it takes me to a prompt, i thought this may be easy but apprently its not (refrain from the flames)... how do i install the windows-esque shell?
You mean a windows manager? There's a bunch of them, so the first step is to choose one. KDE and Gnome are the most popular. I don't use Debian, but you can probably just type something like "apt-get kde" to install KDE for example.
your display may not have been setup properly... if you have an lcd and set it to lcd res, this may cause it. In my experience linux sometimes has problems with this. Set it to the same resolution without the LCD notation.
edit: duh, you installed it on a laptop so you more than likely set it to lcd... change that, and you should be good to go.
