i've been using winme for a few days now and like it...to a point. unfortunately, there are a couple of usability things that really bug me, things that were fine in win98se.

i like to set windows explorer up with no html content, list icons, and sorted by type, while folders opened from desktop by double-clicking open with html content, large icons, sorted by type. on win98se if i set explorer up to do this with one directory (say, the root of the c drive), all the other directories would follow suit. but on winme i have to set up each directory individually. pain in the butt.

also, i don't like to see windows files and folders in their dos allcaps format. in win98se there's a setting in folder options that lets you turn allcaps off. it's gone from winme.

does anyone know how to customize these 'features' of winme so it will behave like win98se?

About your first question:eek:pen Windows Explorer and set your folder options the way you want. Then from the "View" tab of "Folder options" click on "Like current folder".This way the settings will be kept for every folder.I don't know the answer to your second question.

The allcaps thing is annoying. Please follow up if you find the solution.

The ALLCAPS thing should be on the same tab mentioned in the second post. At least, that's where it usually is.

Screw explorer. It sucks.

I've been using Powerdesk Explorer for many years and I love it

www.ontrack.com

They have a free version available as well, so give it a run. You can look in zip files, copy stuff out, etc without actually unzipping everything. Plus the search function is nicer.. PLUS things don't look like a damn web page all the time.

I don't reckon it is there.

I do use PowerDesk, but it relies on Explorer as well so ALLCAPS is still in effect.

I also hate some of the limiting features they put it. I tried to make a system disk using the dos SYS command and it told me this command can only be done on a hard drive. Who the f*ck is microsoft to tell me that I can't make a system disk!? I've been using a computer for 10 years and now they think I'm not smart enough to use a boot floppy? Yeah right. Just to get a disk to flash a bios I had to go make a "Startup Disk" and then erase all the crap that MS put on there. WinMe is cool but it's gonna take a while for all the little replacement utitilites to get written. I might take a whack at coding a new WinME sys command if I can't find a decent one that works.

I'm not home to look at my system, but is there a 'bootdisk.exe' or similar in the \Windows\Command area?

That's right, no boot floppies can be made with WinME. The sys command only works on hard drives, The Explorer format command doesn't support "copy system files", and the manual format command doesn't support "/sys".

Looks like the last Windows version you can use to make bootable DOS floppies is Win98SE.

WinME can make a startup disk which is just a fancy boot disk. If you don't want the CD-ROM support and stuff just delete it from the floppy.

I gave up and went back to SE. The final straw was IE 5.5. What a POS! Slow as hell, crashes, etc. Now I'm running SE with IE 5.01 SP1 and Media Player 6.4. Fast, stable, no Windows Explorer weirdness. This setup should be fine until Win2k gets its driver/game support together.

I'm just setting up a batch file in my path to create an RxDos (freeware DOS clone w/ FAT32) boot disk. I do agree that IE 5.5 is crappy though. On a lot of sites if I click on a file to download it then the browser window disappears/turs into the file download window. Oh well, I guess they'll get it together eventually.
