Does this mean Fox News is lying when they claim that democrat run states are dangerous shooting galleries?

Shake this one with a stick. Toronto, Canada is the 4th largest city in North America. Guess how many gun homicides they had in 2022?

Wait for it.....

Sounds like at least half the people in this country should not be qualified to own a gun.

Meanwhile the red city of Jacksonville in the red state of DeSantisville had 109 gun homicides. Jacksonville is the 14th largest city in North America. I chose Jacksonville because it is the largest red city.

I ran some numbers on the per capita gun death rates in both cities using 100,000 as a constant

Toronto, Canada 1.58
Jacksonville, Florida 11.96

Conclusions???

My conclusions, American exceptionalism is way overrated and Democratic cities are not the problem.

BTW - Per capita gun homicide rate in New York City?

States with the most lax gun laws have the most homicides, in other news republicans still believe more guns = more safety.

I thought this article was interesting, and it seems quite relevant.

I mean, I have long heard that "means restriction" is surprisingly effective at reducing suicide rates, but this seems to be a handy summary of some of the evidence. Don't think I'd seen it expressed in detail before.

One high-income country is a particular exception to the downward trend: the US. Though rates in the country declined throughout the 1990s, at the turn of the century they began to rise again. Between 2000 and 2018, the suicide rate jumped 35 percent.

In passing the article also seems to include evidence against the claim you often hear that "people in poor countries with real problems don't get depressed or kill themselves".

(I'm actually not so happy to hear the evidence in the other part of this article - that psychological therapies can reduce suicide rates, as I personally have a somewhat negative attitude to the whole mental health industry - but, fair's fair, the evidence says what it says)

Yet another person too quick to shoot to kill. Someone may make a separate thread about this...

More idiots who shouldn't be allowed to own guns. I want to point out a big difference of random violence you can get when a lot of people crowd into a relatively small area vs a group promoting violence.

Trump supporters and white nationalist have promoted violence over the years. They are currently threatening civil war. These same people will accuse groups like BLM of being terrorists because violence has occurred at some of the George Floyd protests.

I've always said the BLM violence was not supported by the group. The same thing that happens after city teams win sports championships. The Denver Nuggets and the NBA did not promote the violence that broke out after the game. If you listen to righties they would have you believe the Nuggets or the NBA promote violence. They have been somewhat successful in conflating Jan 6 and other white nationalist violence with BLM protests. Don't buy into the bullshit.

I chose it because it is the largest city run by Republicans. Using it to refute their premise that only Democrat run cities have all these gun deaths. NYC is far safer than Jacksonville
