I am building a new Q6600 system

on my mobo, it has ATX 24 and 8pin for cpu power

my psu has 20+4 and 4pin

will this work in some way? or do i have to go out and buy a new psu?

The 8-pin header is wired such that a 4-pin connector will fit and deliver the right voltages, OTOH a quad is current-hungry so sharing that current through twice as many wires is better.

But my board only has the 4-pin connector and plenty of people are using it with quads.

As a general rule, the 4-pin ATX12V power cable should be safe up to about 110W "ish" processor TDP, provided the wiring and terminals are not sub-standard. At ~130W and higher, the 8-pin connector really ought to be implemented.

The "20+4" connector is designed so that it can be combined to form a 24-pin connector.

got a matx evga mobo which has a 8pin atx connector, my psu doesnt have it, so i just plugged the 4 pin one and it powered up a e6750 without problem. on the evga mobo manual it says "4 pin atx connector "maybe used"" so i guess it is ok if the cpu isnt power hungry.
