IU am planning on building a system for a friend of mine, never have put together an AMD system, this will be my first.

This system will not be overclocked and is a general purpose machine (some gaming and MS office 2000 type stuff), reliability and price is important.

So far, I want to use the MSI K7T Pro2A with Duron 800 or T-bird 1 ghz, geforce MX, Sounblaster Live! value, 20 gb hd, 128mb ram, 17" monitor, 50X CDROM, ps2 mouse and Kboard.

Is there any combinations of equipment to stay away from? Or some that seem to work better?

Any issues with Win98SE or other software?

Your Question is a little vague, it's so difficult to predict incompatibilites, you really just need to try it and see, normally though after a bit of fiddling things work out.

For the kind of use you are describing, a Duron 800 would be more than adequate, after all, you can always upgrade later to a T/bird 1.2ghz when AMD have a new professional class CPU and the prices drop.

Sounds like a good choice of components. I didn't realise you could still get the SB Live value, I thought it had been replaced by the 1024 or the Gamer 5.1.

How many speakers are you going to attach?, 4 speakers and a card like that are only really needed for DVD/Intense gaming/Using PC as a hi-fi so you could save money there by getting a SB 128 / Aureal Vortex card and 2 speakers.
