Compatible sound cards?

I've read that certain sound cards can be incompatible with certain mobos and crash a system constantly. Dunno if that's true, but assuming it is, then what sound card should I use for my TH7ii running windows xp?

I was really looking into a sound blaster live 5.1. This choice OK or no?

The one combination you definitely want to avoid is using the original Soundblaster Live! (the non-5.1 series) on a VIA chipset. Other than that, it's just the generic advice: Use a card that's been on the market for a while so that you get somewhat matured drivers.

You should be fine, most sound cards including the original SB Live work fine in VIA boards now(I`ve a SB Live value 1024 and Audigy in my VIA boards),other good choices are Santa Cruz,Audigy,Philips AE,Hercules Game Theatre XP.

You should be fine, link26. That ABIT TH7-II is an Intel Pentium 4-based (Socket 478/mPGA478) motherboard that uses an Intel 850 chipset (which requires an identical pair of PC800 RDRAM sticks).

You should have NO probelms whatsoever with that SB Live! 5.1 . I've had problems with soudblaster Live! 1024 (Value) cards on two different ASUS P4B266 motherboards; I put SB Live! 5.1 cards in both and they work flawlessly now.

Oh, Intel 850 ... the one thing to mind is that this chipset has a surprisingly low PCI total bandwidth of around 80 MB/s, so you don't want to use a top end sound card with a really high bandwidth demand (unless you don't use any other high bandwidth PCI devices).
