i haven't really been following the scene closely the past few years, but i'm starting to get parts together for a new system.
once amd cuts prices, i'm thinking of an amd x2 3800+ with an AM2 mobo; either msi k9n platinum or asus m2n-e.

i saw a tempting deal on a 2x1gb OCZ ddr2-800 gold kit, but i read about AM2 systems not being able to POST with some types of memory. what brand/speed should i get? (and do i really need to get ddr2-800 speeds or will lower speeds be fine?)

thanks.

I got the ocz ddr2800 cas4 and it works fine, and havent heard anything to suggest it wouldnt. get ddr2-800, am2 was designed with it in mind.

i just checked out OCZ's forums and saw this thread about compatibility issues with their gold pc6400 kits (the one that i'm looking to purchase) and some AM2 mobos. it seems that the bios is an issue and flashing to an updated bios will resolve the issues. but if i can't POST at all, then flashing a bios will be hard to do.

You'll get the most performance from DDR2-800 with AM2.

Almost any DDR2-800 modules should work with the MSI K9N and Asus M2N, however, double check that the motherboard can support the voltages required by the memory modules. Standard DDR2 is 1.8v, but often high performance modules want more. The OCZ in the above link wants 2.3v.

that's just way too expensive.

i'm buying these parts over the next few weeks as i find deals, sales, etc. i think i've settled on a corsair 2gb kit. its ddr2-800 and uses 1.9 volts. corsair's site lists compatibility with both the asus and msi am2 boards. the ocz was tempting b/c of the price, but having trouble POSTing would be a pain since i don't have any other ddr2 memory to reflash the bios.

OCZ memory problems have been pretty much cleared by the latest bios...that is for the MSI K9N series and the ASUS M2N32-SLI DLX...they are currently working on to clearing issues on the M2N-SLI DLX and the M2N-E...if all the issues aren't cleared before the end of July, go MSI K9N PLATINUM...the latest bios 1.31beta seems to be pretty good.
