I cannot get my current 16GB (2x8) DDR4-3200 to run, even when I change settings in bios for xmp. I'm using the rig with just one stick of 8GB.

Shouldn't this slower RAM be no issue?

I'm using the 3000MHz Vengeance LPX with zero issues on the ITX Asus Z170-I Pro.

I'm sure the standard 2133MHz will be compatible, but you're also giving up some performance.

Also using the Corsair 3000Mhz 16GB kit (2x8GB) since August 5th 2015 with no issues on a Maximus VIII Hero. XMP works flawlessly.

I tested setting the memory to 2133 and lost quite a bit of performance, especially minimum FPS, in the vast majority of the games I play. I wouldn't recommend anything less than 3000Mhz DDR4.

Sorry for the slow reply. Hope you've found working memory since the original post. I do have the same motherboard as you and the RAM I mentioned in my initial reply works perfectly at its rated speed. I'm on BIOS version 1804.

Turns out the MB had issues...

I was too late to get a replacement MB thru Amazon, so I dealt with Asus/USA warranty repair in Indiana. They finished repair in 2 days and it's on the way to me...should have it tomm (Thursday).

On their site, the specific repair was not listed. I believe it was either a defective RAM slot or the memory controller... I'll find out which when I 'live-chat' with an Asus tech rep a bit later this morning.

Just an FYI... When I first live-chatted w/ Asus last week, the tech said that it could be the memory controller, as they've noticed many folks with CPU heat sink/fan coolers are over-tightening the screws through the MB that hold the HSF in place, thus sometimes causing damage.

memory controller is on the cpu so unless its bent you probably havent damaged it
the only damage you can really do is in relation to contact between the cpu and the socket which can affect stability reducing max stable speeds

Thanks.

Wonder why why the tech said that then...hmm.

I just got the MB back last night- Thursday. (Picked it up at Fedex... fast turnaround...hope everything works). This morning I'm bringing it to my buddy to put everything together in my VERY small Mini-ITX case, the Ncase M1. I could do it but don't have the time/patience this weekend. It was a tough build for me with extremely little room for all the components and my large hands.

On the slip in the Asus box w/ the MB there was no indication of what repair was done. I will go on the Asus service site and live-chat w/ a rep to find out in a few hours.

My son will be thrilled with the gaming rig back working again, as he has had the cold-sweats not playing Battlefield 1 for the last 2 weeks or so. I hope the DDR4 -3200 RAM will work.

Going by the QVL for that MB... I have the Corsair -3200 and new Kingston -2133 which I will return if I get the -3200 running.

My friend hasn't had a chance yet to put the rig together for me yet (I'm working), so I don't know if the Asus 'repair' took care of the memory issue or not.

I inquired at the Asus site about what specifically they repaired on the MB. I just received a reply... "They flashed the bios and everything is fine..."

HMM.......... I ALREADY had flashed my bios to the latest '2002' version before I sent it in to them......... What is going on? Needless to say, I sent them another email... have not heard back yet.
