Compatibility ssd's/motherboard

The fellow upgrading my PC claims I need a new motherboard as mine is not compatable? The new ssd's is a Samsung 850 evo 500 gb, the m/board I believe is asus (4yrs old) . I think he hasn't got the right driver, what are your thoughts cheers Gaz

any mobo with Sata support is compatible. What issues does he think you will have?

He reckons it's not compatible and will not load windows 7 so I need a new m/board!

what exact mobo is it? It should have no problem with win 7. XP is another matter.

I don' know as it's at his place ,but I feel sure there's a driver for it,somewhere

It will be the motherboard driver if anything, most people don't bother to install it but usually it provides a big performance increase.

He's said that he'll ring asus tomorrow to find out if there's a driver for it, don't think I'll hold my breath!

He's either full of crap and trying to sell you a new motherboard or he doesn't know what he's doing. A four year of ASUS motherboard will have SATA III and it will support any SSD on the market. The drivers it needs are loaded before Windows 7 is installed (the disc loads a number of basic drivers before installation).

I recently put a Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB in a 6 years old ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO (Phenom II era) with Windows XP x64. Worked fine in IDE mode, and could have done so in AHCI too if I had found the working Driver before I gave up (I did found it later).
Resumen: No, you don't need a new Motherboard.

Cheers lads,seems it will work but need someone else to do it.
Have found out just that the asus m/boards no. Is,
P7h55-m si and windows disc is windows 7 not xp

Yeah, if he's having problems with it, he shouldn't be building computers for other people.
