I am thinking of buying following (almost all from a site called NewEgg (?); Can you please confirm if this combo will work?

RAIDMAX Black Aluminum Gaming Case with 420W Power Supply, Model "668WBP" - $88
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - $164
1GB 400MHZ DDR (Kingston) - $160
Samsung 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive, Model SP1614N - $89
ASUS "A7V400-MX" VIA KM400A Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU - $48

Pleeease help.

Also, do I need to buy sound card and graphics display card separate or is it included in above?

No that will not work. The A64 processor is either socket 754 or 939. The motherboard you have is a socket A. Decide which processor you're getting first (939 or 754) and then buy a motherboard with the same socket type.

BTW, that board you list does have onboard graphics and sound but you can't use that board anyway so it doesn't matter.

Onboard graphics are fine for basic computer use but newer games require a dedicated card.

Everything else looks fine but the mobo you listed,it is socket A.You can either stick to the Athlon 64 for $164 and get a socket 754 mobo or add 30 bucks for the proc and get the an Athlon 64 (939) then get a socket 939 mobo.

Thanks - I found AMD Opteron but it says socket 940 - is that close enough to 939 or does it have to be exact?

No, it has to be exact. Look for a processor that you want to go with (probably an AMD Athlon 64) and then a motherboard that will support that.
