why not get a dvd burner? there are a lot of good dvdrws for less than $100. Nec's 8x =/-RW is $75 at newegg

well, first off all, i don;t live in the US (but in the Netherlands) so unfortunately, Newegg is not an option. and second, i think i'll wait until the DVD dual layer burners become a bit more common. i don't want to shrink and screw around when copying DVD's, and i think that for backup purposes the full size DVD's will be a lot better...

so i'll probably buy one in the beginning of next year..

thanx for the tip though

NEC's EU support is better than it's US support, the "official" firmwares that get released are always only available on their dutch or german site. the NEC 2510A is dual-layer compatible and sells for $93. But like CD-RWs they were all once $700 and now less than $50. Also, I'm not too big on samsung HDs, I'd prolly go for a maxtor/seagate/WD. But, other than those thoughts, your specs are very good and you should be very happy with the upgrade.

I would go with an MSI X48 or X52 combo drive instead of the Samsung. Other than that, it's fine. If you decide to mod the case for coolition and/or quietude [sic], check out coolcases.com and borrow his ideas on the Compucase 6A19 (chassis same as AMB).

Thanx for all the replies people!. it's good to discuss this with people who actually know something about hardware, contrary to the uninterested part timers in the local comp store..

anyway, i think the dual layer NEC drive is a great idea. i can get it here for ?94, so not a bad deal i guess. in that case, i will not have to buy a combodrive, and thus can opt for a lite on or nec dvd player (i guess having two opticals of the same brand would be the best)

i am a bit concerned about the memory on the ASus mobo though.. i heard a lot of contrary things. a lot of people say that its very picky about the sticks you use, Toms hardware says it takes everything.. anybody any thoughts on this combo?
