"Compatability-mode paging reduces overall system perf. - NEED HELP

I right click "My Computer" and hit "Properties", then the "Performance" tab and there I get this message:

"Compatability-mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive C is using MS-DOS compatability mode file system."

What does this mean? It definately reduces my system performance since it has dropped my 3dmark2k score about 900 marks.
I installed Win98, then upgraded to WinME(thinking that would fix it), and I still have the problem.

Think a quick reinstall (quick, hah) of WinME would fix it, or would I need to format?

I have one 30gb drive (maxtor 7200rpm).

Thanks

What type of motherboard do you have? It sounds like you need to install drivers for your IDE controller.

ahh.. I hate this problem. currently I cannot remember exactly how I solved it. it has to do with your IDE controller device drivers.

As many people have pointed out on this forum, the Via IDE drivers aren't the greatest (unless that has changed recently, I personally don't know). right click My Computer, go to properties, and then the device manager. then go to hard disk controllers. what does it say there? I'm guessing it says that there's a problem there. if it says that it has a Via IDE bus master controller, you have 2 options. update the driver with the latest ones on the internet, or hit delete, and let it think of these as just normal IDE controllers.

I'm guessing it's also giving you problems with the CDROM's too? if so, you might have a problem using the windows 98 CD for installation of default drivers.

haha you got it all right Soccerman!
My CD-Roms worked fine until I went to the system properties today. Now they dont work either!
I go to the device manager and both my CDROM's have been X'ed out. There it says
"This device is not working properly because a device it depends on, Primary IDE controller (dual fifo), has been dynaimcally disabled."

so I go to the Primary IDE controller properties and there it says
"This device cannot work properly until you restart your computer (Code 14.)"

I restart my computer and get the same errors. Restart again and get the same. Shutdown then turn it back on and i get the same errors. Restart again and I get the sameeeeeee thing.

I think I will delete windows and install win2k (not ME) without a format, then apply the drivers and all that. Think that should do it?

I think if you can download the latest drivers from the internet, and extract them to a directory on the hard drive, you MIGHT be able to get it running ok.

if you want to do this, then what you should do is this:

tell us what it says in that hard drive controllers group in the system properties..

if they are the default INTEL ones, then something is wrong, it should work fine, but I'm guessing it's the Via IDE device drivers that are causing the problem.

download the latest drivers. extract them to the hard drive without installing them. go to the system properties again, and delete what is in the hard disk controllers group. restart, and see what happens. if it asks for drivers, point to the directory that you made. if it doesn't, then just let it install normally. tell me what happens ok?

There are 3 things in the Hard disk controllers

(!)Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
(!)Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
VIA Bus Master PCI IDE controller

check the registry for NOIDE and if you find the entry, remove it.
