I'm going to be upgrading my old computer for my mom. These are the specs:

Biostar M7VIG PRO Mobo NEW
AMD XP1700 NEW
Crucial 256MB PC 2100 DDR NEW
250 watt PSU (please, please work) NEW
Speeze HSF
20 GB HD (old pos; my mom doesn't want to pay more than $200 for all of this)

What are the key differences between Windows 98SE and ME? My mom is use to ME, but I always thought that 98SE was better. Of course I used 98 for 3 years so I am biased. Which one is more stable is the main thing I'm looking at.

WinME is not even worthy of consideration.

Win98 - Junk
WinME - Even junkier, and by a pretty big margin however that's possible.

I installed winME the day it was released. 3 hours later I was back to win98. ME = biggest POS ever.

windows 98 se install size---around 500 mb

windows me install size-------around 1.5 gb I hate large footprints since its hard to fit a ghost image in One cdr

Windows ME is not very popular specially in this forum, I have not tried it myself and was using windows 98se before moving on to XP.
Since moving on to xp I have not needed to reinstall my operating system for the past 1 year. I have been waiting for an excuse to reformat and reinstall but everything seems to work well so have not bothered. I have changed video cards 3 times, installed TV cards ect with no issues whatso ever.

Do yourself a favor and save yourself some time and just get Windows XP.

for a decent computer like that, i would suggest at least windows 2000 or even windows xp... 2000 and xp are very similar and both of them are very stable... only huge difference is that xp has all the "eye candy" while windows 2000 is just bare basics...

reason why i wouldn't wanna choose either win98 or winme is cuz of stability issues. i would get blue screens quite often.. also, i notice a lot of performance slowdown w/ both os's...

While I also absolutely recommend Windows 2000 or XP without reservation (I use both), I also not the there is a budget of $200 and assume that he has access to either/both OS. In that case (though really, I am loath to say it ;) ), I'd go with Windows 98SE. Especially if she's like my mom, and would only use the PC for very light tasks, like email or some browsing, and then leave the PC alone, stability should not be too much of an issue if she hardly puts any stress on it. Of course, if this is for more important stuff, like work or heavier use, I'd seriously try to get her to break that budget constraint and spring for Windows XP or 2000.

Windows ME is basically Windows 98SE , but with MUCH more bloat.. Microsoft tried to fancy and "pretty" it up.
Its resulted in a very unstable operating system.

ME was a big FAT LOLLIPOP for the nation. It just satisfied alot of innocent consumers that didnt want win 98. Get xp. It is well worth it...
