Comparison: E6850 vs Q9550 ??

Does anyone have any sense of whether I will see any perf increase in moving from E6850 to Q9550? Running Vista x64, 4GB RAM, no overclocking currently or anticipated. 975X chipset (ASUS P5W DH). Mostly concerned about gaming. Vid card is NVidia 280GTX

I looked for benchmarks around the web but couldn't find one that compares these directly, mostly it is quad-to-quad or dual-to-dual

The general rule of thumb is that gaming machines do not currently take advantage of more than 2 cores. You will find exactly the same performance, and simply be $350 poorer. 😉
 
Based on what I could find, my cerebral cortex was sort of beginning to suspect that what you say is true, but since "9550" is such a bigger number than "6850" I was having a hard time convincing my lizard brain of that.

Quad core will be more useful for gaming in the future, but right now it's impossible to justify a $350 purchase that would basically be a lateral move.
 
you *might* see a perf loss in certain situations as the e6850 is clocked slightly higher, i will agree with DSF that it is a lateral move (right now).
 
Don't upgrade unless you notice a performance issue with your own system, it's that simple, so shut up and enjoy your fast processor without worrying about what's just been released. You can probably keep that until the 32nm Nahalem refresh and stay happy.
