Five months ago I completed my first build (which was great), but now that I've lived with the computer for a few months, there are some things I'd like to change. The first is the subject of this thread - I bought a ThermalTake 480W PSU originally. Didn't realize until I was putting the computer together that my mobo (DFI LanParty Ultra-D) had a 24-pin connector, but the PSU was 20-pin. I went ahead and built the computer and it worked fine - and a lesson learned for my second build.

There have been some issues that I'm attributing to the PSU and 20/24 pin incompatibility. First, I can't get my memory to run in dual-channel mode. When I put it in the Dual Channel DIMMS, it posts, but rather than go to the Windows login screen, it just hangs blank. Second, sometimes (three times in six months), when I leave the computer for a couple hours, I come back and it's completely locked up.

So I guess this post is two questions. One, do you think my problems are from the PSU? Second, and more important since I'm probably going to change the PSU anyway, what is the difference between the various PCP&C 510 series power supplies? There are six of them, and I want to make sure I get the correct one.

I don't run SLI, so I wonder if the 510 SLI would be overkill. I need 24-pin, so that leaves the 510 A4, AG, and XE as other contenders. I've read the specs, but it seems to me that any one of those four PSUs (SLI, A4, AG, XE) could work for me, but I figure it would be best to ask here before proceeding.

System:
CPU: AMD 3200+ Winchester
Mobo: DFI LanParty Ultra-D
GPU: 6600GT
Opticals: 2 Burners (another problem, for a later post)
HDD: 1x74GB Raptor, 1x250GB WD

Your other choices are the OCZ 520 Powerstream or my new favorite Psu, the SilverStone Zeus 650!

The Zeus is quiet, has 4 12V rails, 2 PCI-E leads, 24/20 pin plug, 8 pin and 4 pin connectors for +12V and attractively priced at $175.

I dont think the 510 is overkill. When i purchase a PSU, i buy for power requirements down the road.

Thanks for the suggestions! But does anyone know the differences between the 510 Series PCP&P units? I think it may just be pin connections available, but I may be wrong.

As for what I'm going to get, I placed my order for the Seasonic S12-500 this morning. I did a lot of looking around at DFI Street and Silent PC Review in addition to these forums and decided on that unit. Efficient, quiet, and enough stable, reliable power that it should last me at least through my next upgrade cycle.

Next steps - sleeving and taking care of the wires! This is my first build, and with two HDDs, two opticals, a floppy, and two cards, this has been more wiring than I anticipated.
