Comparing two drives

I have a 640gb WD Caviar Black drive for games right now which is half full. My steam install alone is almost one third of the used space. I am a few steps closer to re-organizing my drive setup and I was curious if anyone here has switched from a 640gb Black drive to a Samsung F3 500gb drive. Was there any speed increase? The only reason I wouldn't just dive in and do it is the fact that it's a smaller drive. Any thoughts? Would it be worth giving up about 100 gb to use a potentially faster drive for games? Thanks.

Okay. One more thing, when I started using the 640gb for games instead of just data storage, I did only a quick format. Would re-formatting (after backing up) do me any good? I don't know what Windows 7 likes for cluster sizes on mechanical drives, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

It might if you have a lot of old junk that you no longer use (or registries to things you've taken off.) If you do want to switch HDs, switch to a bigger one, not a smaller one. Drives get slower as they get filled so a larger HD will mean using a smaller portion.
