I am planning on building a new AMD gaming computer to replace my Gateway FX6710-01 desktop. I want a Phenom II X4 965 BE C3 stepping, as well as 4 GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, an ASUS Crosshair Formula III motherboard, and a Radeon HD 5870 grahpics card.

The main reason I am building this new PC is because of the unfair warranty policies I was outright lied to about when I bought my Gateway desktop from a major electronics retailer in my town. I am having this PC built at a small PC repair shop which has been fixing my computers for years, and it takes usually less than 7 days to get it back, repaired and working.

I want to spend within a $2,000 budget. Personally, I want to build a Core i7 system, but I would end up spending >$3,500 if I did so. Intel has the fastest hardware, but AMD has the best hardware, for the price.

The problem with the warranty is that my PC has to be sent out to the manufacturer each time it has to be repaired. The last time it was serviced for a dead hard drive, it was gone for almost Three months!

Use this link to view detailed specifications on my current gateway gaming desktop, and tell me if the new PC with the hardware I stated at the top of this post, is a good, solid upgrade to my current machine. Please note that nothing on my PC has been overclocked. The C2Q Q9400 is running at it's stock 2.66 GHz, as well as the RAM and GPU.

Is a Phenom II X4 965 BE @ 3.4GHz any faster than my C2Q Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz?

The $ numbers seem kinda odd going from the amd rig to intel rig. I would think the diff would only be at the most $200 unless you wanted a super high priced intel chip :)

Well where do I start?

$2000 is a lot of money for a PC. If a shop can't build you a near top of the line Intel based PC for $2000 you need to find another shop. There is nothing wrong at all going with AMD either but for $2000 you are clearly in Intel I7 territory.

I just went over to Dell and customized a Studio XPS 9000, with a I7 920, 6GB Ram, 500 gb hard drive, ATI 5870, XFI Sound, 23" monitor, Win 7 home premium, and 2 year advanced warranty with in home service for $1800. That was a quickie search and build. And no doubt that thing will perform.

But here is what I would suggest. Take $50, buy yourself Mike Myers All in One, study to build your own, and get A+ certified along the way. You could build one for less the half the costs and troubleshoot your own. Being a gamer, especially if you're a serious one, you should be able to build, tweak, and troubleshoot your own box.

We all started just where you are right now. :)

Why would a Core i7 system cost $1500 more than a Phenom II x4 965 system?
yeah no kidding. he could build a Core i7 system for only about 100 bucks more. or he could just build an I5 system for roughly the same price as a Phenom 2 965 build.

Dont waste your money on expensive cpus/motherboards and graphics cards.

Bang for the buck as of now, the perfectly balanced and superior system is centered around the Core i5 750, 4Gigs of RAM, an ATI 5850, an Intel Postville 80gb SSD drive, a Samsung F3 1TB hard disk drive. Build it with quality peripherals, an excellent quality case, a reliable PSU, a superior keyboard and mouse, and you'll have a powerful computer to last for years.

Have fun.

This, though I would probably put 8gb of ram in.

If I'm budgeting a PC for $2000, I will generally spend around $750 on the user interface - decent headphones/speakers, good keyboard mouse, and a high quality LCD.

Good rule of thumb - buy the slowest of the best. You'll generally pay double for every 10% extra performance (stock), and after overclocking, you don't get anything extra at all.

More RAM is always the better RAM. Windows 7 caches and caches well into it. Pair 8GB of DDR3 with an SSD and you have a very fast/responsive system.

Core i7 975 = $1,000, Phenom II X4 975 = $200.

The X58 motherboards are also quite expensive.

im trying to grasp how i can explain how big of a fail you just pulled out.
LGA1366 = i7 = Lexus... a branch Above Toyota.
LGA1156 = i5/i7 860 = Toyota... <--- better area to cross compare

Compare honda with toyota... not honda with lexus.

You just cant cross compare a X58 system with an AMD system. It just doesnt make sense.

And shit if were rolling in 1000 dollar intel processors, then go up one to where AMD has no ground yet on.

Why not just grab a hexcore i7 980 or 970.

For 2k, you can build a way more then solid i7 machine.
I could probably even do it for 1k depending on the gpu.

There is no such thing as the Phenom II X4 975, fastest Phenom II right now is the is the 965. And why are you comparing the Phenom II X4 to Intel's fastest and horribly priced extreme edition processor? The I7 920 can be had for under $300 and out performs the Phenom II X4 965 at stock speeds, and the performance gap only grows once overclocking is brought into the equation.

Price difference between Phenom II X4 and I7 should be no more than $200.

Yeah, seriously dude it's not hard to find an extremely kickass Intel rig for under $2k. I just pieced this together on newegg:

Core i5 750
Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3P motherboard
A-DATA Gaming Series 8GB DDR3 1600 (4x2GB)
HIS Radeon HD 5870
Corsair P128 SSD
2x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Samsung Blu-Ray Combo Drive
Antec Nine Hundred case
Antec NEO ECO 620W PSU

No rebates to deal with, but a couple of those have promo codes that would net you something like $25 off. The total comes to $1,787.26 shipped. I clearly put in some luxury items here like the 128GB SSD for Windows etc, the 2 x 1TB Caviar Blacks for a RAID array, and the Blu-Ray drive, to make it clear that $2,000 can buy you just about anything you'd want.
