This thread is STRICTLY SPEAKING ONLY WITH V6 MODELS. DO NOT BRING UP Z28S OR GTS OR SSES AND COBRAS PLEASE!!!

OK - as Vallaha1 will agree the insurance for teenagers in Texas is pretty outrageous. The estimated insurance w/ collision and moderate liability for a teenager with a Z28 is over $4,500/yr. A V6 model will be considerably less, less than $3,000/yr, for a brand new 2001 Camaro.

It goes basically without saying that V6 mustangs have now become chick cars. V6 Camaros on the other hand are not really stereotyped to any sex, I see a fair amount of both. It goes basically without saying that the performance of either will not be stellar. With a manual, is the performance 'adequete?' I guess I don't know what I'm trying to ask here...

OK here's this:

Will the V6 models give you the same image, with significantly less racing performance, as the V8 models?

Regarding that V6 Mustang = chick cars, the SN95 models before the 99 model year definetly were. The reason being is because they only had, what, 150 hp? That's crap, not to mention they were crap slow. Now they have somewhere in the range of 200 or 205, and can do very low 15's, and I see a LOT more guys driving the new V6s as opposed to the old ones.

Regarding the performance issue, both could hit low 15's, 0-60 somewhere in the low 7/high 6 range.

Elemntal - something like 80% of V6 mustangs are sold to females under the age of 25. Far less Camaro's are.

Plus, you are in Texas my man! Fbody capitol of the WORLD! More fbodies are sold here than anywhere else, by FAR!

Also - you might consider the Camaro's sister car, the Firebird. Much more "macho" than either Mustang or Camaro, plus the insurance will be lower than Camaro (take it from me, I know first hand)

a note on the performance issue, they are nearly identical..

so if you want to be like 20 billion other people, get the stang.. but the Firebird is a rare beauty!!

I thought you were comparing V6 Camaro vs. Mustang? Anyway, to the car guys, the V6 definitely won't give you the same image. To everybody else, they might not even know how to differentiate the V6 and the V8s, so no difference there.

-edit-
BTW, if you're trying to avoid insurance premium, why not take another car with cheap insurance, and do an engine transplant? That way you'll get the performance, without having to pay the higher rates.

You think that the insurance on firebirds would be less?

Interesting...

/me drools over Trans Am with wrx package

And I would agree with you that Texas is the fbody capital of the world. No bad weather to present problems to RWD, and beautiful weather to go along with ttops.

t-tops... t-tops my man! now you are getting it! :)

yes, insurance is less on a firebird. Reason being, they are a little more expensive and are not sold as much. Therefore, there are fewer parents buying them for their high school kids. Therefore the avg. age of firebird drivers are older than Camaro owners. The Camaro has the stigma of being a high school male car, driven hard and therefor likely to be dangerous, thus the high insurance. The V6 Mustang is a girl's car, therefore the lower insurance. The firebird is an older male's car, also therefore lower insurance

Why does it have to be new? I would just get an older one with a v8 and pay cash that way you would only need liability.

the new mustang with the 190 bHp v-6 engine is really not that quick..hitting 0-60 in maybe 7.8 seconds and doing the quarter in 15.5...the camaro does 0-60 in lows 7s and does the quarter in 15.1...however, i do believe that the mustang is more reliable than the camaro

190HP?? ugh my ole taurus sho put out 240hp with the 3.2 :) would spank stock 90's mustangs in v8 flava.

you're gonna be made a fool out of time and time again with a V6 in a muscle car.

the ricers will note that you have the v6 model and spank all over you!!

i see 98 ls-1 firebirds for like $18-19K around atlanta and they will spank all over just about any stock car.

i can be stock v6 mustangs by a fair margin and and can beat by 3/4-1 1/2 car lengths(depends on driver) v6 camaros in my 4 cyl. Go with a v8, or dont get one. I feel it is a joke seeing those cars. Its the same concept as ricers, all show, no go.

Once GM dropped the 3.4 for the 3.8, the V6 Camero would give a 5.0 (read: 4.9) Mustang a good run. The 3.4 had 160HP while the 3.8 was worth a good 200HP, this made the V6 Cameros less wuss like. However Ford decided to stick with thier 145HP 3.8 for a bit longer before upgrading it (selling 200HP V6s and 215HP V8s would seem odd)

Another option would be a older t-bird with a 4.6l. It probably wouldn't be any faster than the poser v6 mustang/camaro but change the gears to 3.73:1 and slap some mods on the 4.6l and it would be sweet ride and being a t-bird insurance would be cheap.
