I am looking into getting a gaming laptop, and I have made up my mind on most of it. I will be going with a 17" sager with a 6970M. My big question right now is, what CPU to get in it?

Would a 2630qm be sufficient or would a 2820qm be a worthwhile upgrade? How much difference does the extra L2 cache make? Is there any reason to consider the 2720qm?

I am open to other suggestions besides sandy bridge for the CPU, but the laptop needs to be here in time for quakecon.

As for other hardware, I know what to get. The 6970M looks good in reviews so far, and I aleady have a SF SSD for a boot drive :D

The 2630QM is a GREAT CPU and won't bottleneck the GPU, so I wouldn't be worried. The 2720QM and 2820QM support other instruction sets, I believe, which isn't important for the normal user. The L2 cache may help a little though, but unless you are number crunchring or were running 485M SLI, you don't need anything better than the 2630QM.

17" sager with a 6970M

Shmee, where are you getting your Sager that you can configure it with AMD GPU?

Am looking at sagernotebooks.com and all the models they are showing me are Nvidia exclusive by the looks of it.

I want a new laptop that is capable of handling DAII and that favors AMD architecture so I'd rather avoid the Nvidia GPU.

hey, I will be getting mine from xoticpc.com, as they are cheaper and dont charge tax in my state, but the sager site also has it. it is the sager p8170. if you want, you can get it with a matte screen for about $220 more.

configured, mine with the 6970, the 2630, a hybrid drive and no OS, 8 GB ram, it costs 1709 subtotal. Then there is just shipping, and they are offering a 3% cash discount.

what is DAII btw?

I must be totally doing a DERP thing here...I swear I am not jerking your chain, I cannot for the life of me find an AMD graphics enabled P8170 laptop through Sager or xoticpc.com (thanks for the link though, definitely like the 90% gamut option ).

I even googled for sager P8170 and I everything that comes up is all NV-based stuff.

Could you go the extra mile for me and post up (or pm me) the hard-link to the laptop. It's driving me crazy now, I shouldn't be this internet-disabled yet, I'm not that old

(DAII == Dragon Age II...the game they actually showcase in the Sager laptop pics on the websites :p)

I just double checked, after hitting the refresh button it is no longer an option. They must have disabled the option in the last few days. (low stock mb? phasing it out?) You can still get it configured that way from AVAdirect though.

hmmm...maybe they are clearing out the inventory ahead of some new model releases? Maybe Llano-based sager laptops to xfire with AMD GPU's?

That would explain it, and does resolve my conundrum. I thought I was going crazy for a moment. :D

You are implying causality. Just because they aren't listing that model doesn't mean you aren't going crazy :p

hey, I am still looking at the sager np8170/clevo p170hm, and apparently the only site where the 6970 is selectable is on avadirect. even on sager's own website they do not offer it.

I believe the model is the -s1, and sagers site says the product doesnt exist :O

seems kinda fishy...
