Comparing Laptop CPU Performance

With a large choice in CPUs for latops I am a little confused as to how they compare. How does a Centrino 1.6Ghz compare to a desktop P4 or AMD? I've been searching for performance results such as Tom's Hardware's CPU charts but can't find anything.

Can anyone help?

Google "Intel dothan" and you will find 100's of comparison tests.

Here is just one example (although it shows P-M in desktop, since it is comparing P-M CPU to desktop Intel and AMD's, with same video. Considering the P-M used the old outdated Intel 855 Chipset, and still kept up or beat the latest chipsets for P4 and A64, it performed well).

Depending on app, P-M 1.8GHz can compare to around Desktop P4 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz and AMD A64 2400+ to 3200+.

Some early tests place an overclocked P-M faster than AMD A64 4000+.

Thanks - I've found lots of comparisons of differing laptops but not so many desktop vs laptop comparisons.

The Intel Dothan is the latest centrino as far as I am aware and my budget for a laptop won't stretch that far. What is the codename of the 1.6Ghz Centrino???

Any more info/ links appreciated.

Centrino is not a CPU. It is an Intel package that includes Intel CPU, along with Intel Wireless (plus something else I think). If you get Dothan with Intel Wireless, it is Centrino, if you get Dothan with Dell Wireless (for example) it is NOT Centrino.

You're right about Centrino - a clever marteting ploy by Intel which I'm sure has earnt them loads of money.

Let me be a bit more specific. My budget for a laptop won't stretch much more over GBP £500 and I've been looking at an Acer TravelMate 4021LMi (link below)

This has a 1.6Ghz Intel Pentium-M 725 CPU

How does this compare to a desktop PC?

For a few pounds less (£4.00) I get a Celeron-M 1.5Ghz which seems a lot worse, although I'm only guessing (Celeron is a budget PC isn't it ??)

For a little more (£16 +VAT) I can get a Acer TravelMate 4401LCi AMD Turion 64 ML28 1.6GHz which has the AMD Turion 1.6Ghz CPU. How does this compare to the Centrino?

How do these latops models compare to say a Desktop P4 3.00Ghz???

Thanks

Pentium-M 725 (1.6Ghz / 400FSB) is slightly slower than a Pentium-M 730 (1.6Ghz / 533 FSB), for obvious reasons.

You're asking how it compares to a desktop CPU? It all depends on the application. Pentium-M's are good at gaming and application performance in general, but they are lacking in multi-media performance and content creation performance. You can't really put it against a desktop system, because within the Pentium-4 line alone, theres a godawful amount of different configurations that would steeply effect performance.

Compared to the Turion ML series, they are about the same, clock for clock. Although Pentium-M's are known to have better battery life at load.

Compared to Celeron-M's, Celeron-M's are maybe 10% slower than a Dothan on average (same clock speed). They consume less power, but they dont have speedstep, and thus their battery life is lower on average, but higher on full load.

celeron m is literally a dothan with 1m cache and no power saving tech, performs pretty much exact same at equal speeds.
