What is the east coast like compared to the west coast, and vice versa?

I define East Coast as washington DC to Boston, but NC and SC can be included if you want.
I define West coast and Seattle, washington down through california.

Which has more traffic? More congestion? More crowding? which has better public transportation? Which is warmer? In which area are people "nicer"? "Friendlier"?

Thanks for any input.

Moderate traffic at rush hour, meaning smooth sailing at any other given time. But all that gets canceled out by spoiled teens in their BMW's and old people on the verge of activating their wills.

Major East Coast cities have better transit systems. Subways and rail systems are scary out west because of earthquakes. :p I don't know much about California, etc....but can say that cost of living out there is higher than East Coast too.

I have lived in L.A., the Bay Area (Berkeley), Philly, and Boston.

If i had to rank them based on my preference: SF, Boston, L.A., then Philly. With that last one being way down there (think log spacing).
Public transportation: Boston, Bay Area, Philly, then L.A.
Crowding (i prefer density): Boston, Bay Area, Philly, then LA.
Friendliness: Bay Area, Boston, Philly, then LA.
Cost of living (ranking based on my experience): Bay Area, Boston, Philly, then LA.
Music scene: Bay Area, Boston, then its a toss up.

... Which is warmer?"

I couldn't help but laugh here... while I would venture to say that Washington and Oregon are not toasty warm, I think that a few hundred miles of California coast line might make the west coast warmer than the region from D.C. to Boston.

:music: Well east coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when Im down there

The mid-west farmers daughters really make you feel alright
And the northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls

The west coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldnt wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world:music:

lived in NV for a few years, and SC for 20+ years.

Affordability- East
Traffic - East is less congested
Pollution - LA/Reno all had clouds of green smog hovering over the city

I have lived in both

East coast comparisons to west coast

East coast has more crime overall But west coast has high crime rate concentrated in certain areas of LA and Oakland.

Traffic is terrible on both, but get better outside of LA and the Bay area for the west coast and south of DC for the east. I do live in coastal orange county where the traffic is very light though. :)

Public transportation is better on the east coast with subways in the major metro areas, the west coast has mostly bus systems. Public transportation south of DC is horrible.

Crowding again follows the same patterns as traffic.

People seem about the same on both sides.

The west coast is warmer in the winter and actually cooler in the summer, nice moderate temperatures.

East Coast. Hot and humid during the summer. Watch out for the hurricanes!

West Coast: The land of Mañana. I always felt like I was on vacation even when I lived there.
East Coast: Full of self absorbed whiners who think civilization ends somewheres just east of New Jersey.

lol. You "define" the West Coast as literall the entire west coast but you only define the East Coast as DC to Boston? What kind of bullshit is that? It makes zero sense...

That's not a very good comparison. South Carolina is basically part of the "south" which would automatically mean cheaper living and less traffic.

To me a major difference is the humidity much of the year on the East Coast. That and all the snow in the north east. All the other things - traffic, density of population, friendlinesss of the people, cost of living,... that stuff varies depending on where you are (microcultures).

The South isn't cheap anymore. Texas on the otherhand...

Agreed. How can you possibly leave NY, NJ, Atlanta, etc... out of the mix?
