compare memory with single and dual channel

Hi,

want to make sure , is dual channel = double side?

is dual channel double the speed of just one side of a memory?

the price is quite different.

I will do some AutoCAD work, so will 512MB of DDR433 PC3500 enough.

I am looking for Samsung or if it doesn't have PC3500 i want to get Kingston. is it enough.

now i talk about notebook, i only have 256mb of ram. i will sure upgrade to 512mb of ram( another 256mb ram) which brand should i get?
my notebook is a NEC Versa S900

no, double sided does not = dual channel. you cannot run a single ram stick in dual channel mode, ya would need 2 sticks for that. also, if ya run 2 double sided ram sticks in dual channel mode it would give ya better performance as opposed to 2 single sided sticks being run in dual channel. if ya can get 4 double sided sticks it would perform even better 🙂 and yes dual channel = 2x3.2g/s = 6.4g/s max theoretical bandwidth. for cad i would strongly recommend a gig of ram at least.

Are you asking for the system you have listed in your sig? If it is a Pentium 3, then it will probably not benefit from dual channel(If its even on option on your setup). If you are talking about a P4 machine, then dual channel will have a much larger impact.

Agreed. The pentium 3 offers no dual channel options.

If you are going the AMD route then dual channel offers in the range of 5-7% increases on average...

The P4 benefits more from dual channel than AXP... I haven't checked in awhile but i am going to *say* 10-20% avergae with some apps pulling ahead even more.

I would normally say just get two matched sticks from the same manufacturer, but, if you are concerned, you could spend a little more and get a Dual channel kit from Corsair, etc.
