Canon 350D

I've been reading about the new CAnon 350D and comparing it to the 20D and pretty much, the only significant diff is the 5fps vs. 3fps and 9point AF vs. 7point AF...

Any other thoughts?

I personally don't think its worth the ~$400 difference ...use that $$ towards a nice lens instead and it will be more worth while IMO

There are plenty of subtle differences that make me want the 20D after having read up on the XT lately. Particularly, it's made of metal and larger so it feels more substantial, is able to withstand heavier usage, and is easier to hold over extended periods of time. I had the DRebel briefly, and the plastic felt really cheap to me. Since the XT is even smaller, it's ability to counterweight large zooms or big primes is questionable.

There's a reason why many pros use the 20D as a backup camera. I suspect that not many of them will switch to the XT.

20D has a magnesium alloy body and better seals.

Also it's shutter mechanism is rated for 100K actuations as opposed to 50K on the 350D.

it's not even that much smaller than the 20D... it's volume has decreased slightly and weight. i think it's perfect-o.

I just messed around with the 350 today. I own a 300D. I CAN NOT STAND the 350. I don't have overly large hands, but I could not find a comfortable way to get my finger over the shutter button. They just made it way too small. It's great for women though :)

But for man hands you gotta go with the 20D (or 300D). I couldn't imagine slapping my 70-200 f2.8 on the front of the 350. I wouldn't be able to hold the thing.

my friend who just got his grubby hands on it today says it feels better than the Canon 20D not only cause it's smaller but especially cause it's lighter.

I find the whole "big DSLR" thing to be the geek equivilent of SUVs.

I prefer the XT build and weight. I bought one and will be getting it tomorrow! Since I carry it around all the time, weight is a big deal.

you realise that SLRS have ALWAYS BEEN BIG, the film ones are all big as well

the D70 is actually bigger then my N80 and i find that the n80 is hard to use because of its size, and its prob 30% bigger then the xt at least

ill take a F5 or F6 with grip over a tiny (D)SLR anyday

SLRs by their nature arnt gonna fit in a picket or whatever so making them smaller IMO is pretty damn pointless

Yes, they have always been big, but they don't HAVE to be big. It's a penis-stroker, IMHO. You have the biggest camera on the block, so what? Bigger != better

No, I have lenses left over from my 300D. I'd like to pick up a 50mm prime, but other things call my money right now :p

They're $70! Go ahead and buy it!

As for the size issue, for the larger lenses, I have read that pros like the larger bodies to help balance, but also the larger body makes for a more stable platform and is more durable. The Drebel felt like a toy to me, even compared to my Sony F-717.

The larger lenses are not necessary for what I do. The largest lense I have is a Sigma 70-300 and it feels fine in my hands. I shutter to think what hiking down a mountain with a massive 20D with grip would be like.

yea a nice big grip to hold onto.

i didnt think the 350D would be too bad to hold on to, but i rather hold the 300D all day than the 350D. the 350D grip is just to small for me. just try it out for yourself guys.

now if you find the 350D just too small for you but dont wanna spend $1300 for the 20D (very nice camera) look on over to the Nikon D70. regarded as a better camera than the rebels.

p.s. theres a $200 dollar rebate for the D70 lens kit (or 100 off the body only kit) till the end of march.
