Adding my setup:

Coolermaster CM Stacker case
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (non dual, running stock speed right now)
1 GB ram (Geil)
BFG 7800GTX
Audigy XS2

3 tests. Was comparing my raptor to a striped non raptor setup. All in all, now im tempted to keep the new pair of disks. Look at how much better the nvidia controller is than the silicon image controller. All clusters done in 16k.

1. Raptor 74GB single drive.

2. Two WD 320GB 16mb cache drives using the Silicon Image RAID controller.

3. Two WD 320GB 16mb cache drives using the Nvidia Nforce4 RAID controller.

Just about any raid 0 setup will outdo a single drive setup.
Now put 2 raptors in a raid 0 and watch your head spin :)

Neat program. I need to test my own setup as well.

I have a A8N32 SLI Deluxe and find the (NV) controller likes 4KB stripe size the best.

here are my results using the Uli RAID controller and 2 WD 250GB drives 64KB stripe.

Uli RAID

suprised by the silicon image results, especially the low burst speed. wish I had 2 raptors to try.

I can assume that placenta has used the latest available drivers and firmware for both controllers - can't I???

There are some personal tests of a pair of 80GB SATA drives using a Raptor as one comparison out there. Links are in my review of the Hitachi 80GB drive here: http://www.techimo.com/reviews/ just click on the drive pic.

thanks for those reviews, I checked them out.

I did have updated firmware. I had upgraded my MB bios a coupel days ago which renewed the Silicon Graphics controller firmwware. (Even though I'm not using that one now). And I downloaded the newest Nforce SATA drivers yesterday during install.

I dont have anything installed at Windows level. I just installed the firmware type stuff and everything seems to work fine.

I had decided to sell those two Western last night, and had them advertised locally. Reason being that Best Buy raised the price on them by $60 since yesterday when I bought them. Then I decided to keep them as a file server on D. So I'll upgrade my 74GB raptor to the 150gb raptor soon for my OS/games, and I'll keep this 600GB file server also. I dont want to go up to 4 disks because of heat/power/cabling issues.

PS, I have the Coolermaster Stacker with the 4 in 1 drive cooler module and the 300mm crossflow fan.

With the shift to dual core and emphasis on multitasking I still dont understand why more people arent going to SCSI. The Raptor has a few advantages, but the one advantage people seem to dismiss about SCSI is it's ability to process multiple threads at the same time. Not even Raptor does that. It still bursts.

*shrug* Just my humble opinion.

i been thinking about SCSI a lot. I used to have the old U160 setup in some 15k rpm drives. but the drives were only 9 and 18gb.

now, i'd need a 74GB SCSI as my OS drive. + a controller card. And if i want a 15k rpm one, its $600+ for the drive alone.

Nah you can get em cheaper than that. I won, last week, a 74gig 15k U320 drive on ebay for 110.00. Controllers can be had for $40.

I use SCSI for my OS and games, and in Jan bought a 150 Raptor. Honestly, within 20 minutes, I noticed a difference. I tried putting up with it, but just couldnt. I RMA'd the Raptor the next day...

I dont really do a ton of multitasking, but there is a NOTICABLE difference just in the simple things. I am just recently moving from U160 10k to U320 15k (thus my purchase on ebay) so I cant wait to see the performance difference with my new 15k drive :)

new or used for that price? Ive always stuck with the "Atlas" series of SCSI drives. Anyone have favorites? I dont really want to buy a used ANYTHING.. drives are sketchy enough as it is.

my next charts will be with my new CPU, to see if it makes any difference.

old cpu: Athlon 64 XP 3200+ (stock=2.0ghz, usually run at 2.2ghz)

new cpu arriving today: Athlon 64 XP 4800+ X2

Well most don't go SCSI because of size vs dollar issue is all i think.

SCSI is nice and all, but when you got 500gig HD for cheap hard to justify it when a 75gig SCSI drive i would fill up in no time.

well.. i installed my first dual core CPU... 4800+ at stock speed..

no difference in my hard drive test. well i gained .1ms in access but thats prob just a coincidence.

I have to read up on dual core now and figure out if theres any other setup I need to do. But it did boot up to desktop and load system tray a bit faster.
