Comparable difference between today's SATA and IDE?

Is there really a performance boost going from IDE to SATA with today's modern mainstream HDDs?

Example: Seagate 7200.8 250gb SATA vs IDE

Hi, In general the drives are about the same, but the interface is Parallel, transfers 8 bits at the time, for ATA (IDE). SATA is serial (Serial ATA), transfers one bit at the time. ATA transfer speed is rated in BPS (Bytes Per Second). SATA is rated in bPS (Bits per second). Takes 8 bits to make one byte. Hope this helps a little, Jim

Depends on the application. For typical desktop usage, there is no difference at all. If you're running a lowend server (a real one, not a media server sitting in your closet that only you access) that can take advantage of NCQ, then SATA will be faster.

P-ATA is a 16-bit interface that transfers two bytes at a time, not 8 bits.
