Hi

I'm here at AT as a n00b builder, but now my Dad has the fever and wants a new notebook :) He can get a Compaq 2405CA from a local box store for $700 USD. It's rural Canada so prices might be a bit higher than a city. It's from a Staples, though...

I tried a search of this forum for this machine but couldn't get any hits. Hope I'm using the search properly. Just wanted to pass this by you guys - price ok, machine ok, anything I should know? His needs are very light - he just wants to own one since he's never had one before.

They have a DSL connection at home - will the internal modem be okay? This computer is not ready for Wi/Fi or wireless connectivity, right?

Service and tech support are the number 1 concern for him since he's not a tech guy at all. I was wondering about the HP/Compaq merger and how that affects support for the Compaq notebooks. You guys seem to be buying new 2410s and others so I assume everything is ok. He will buy any extended warranty that's available with his new notebook.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

# 54g ? 802.11b/g WLAN with 125HSM / SpeedBooster support
# 10/100Base-T ethernet and 56K modem

Okay... did a little research and I think 802.11b/g WLAN means the notebook does come with Wireless capability.

10/100 Base-T Ethernet means that its DSL ready, doesnt it?

Ok thanks. I know that this is laughably basic for you guys, but I am a true n00b.

Can you possibly tell me if that '802.11b/g' means that it is wireless capable right out of the box - i.e. can he go to Starbucks and surf the net wirelessly just like all his friends?

Thanks again s.b.
