Anyone have any GAMING (or other) experiences or opinions to share about the:

Viewsonic VG191B 19" LCD (~$950 online)
Compaq TFT8030 18" LCD (~$1300 online)
Dell 2000FP 20" LCD (~$1360 w/Free Shipping from Dell)

These are the 3 LCD's I've kinda narrowed it down to...I'm going to use it exclusively for LAN gaming, so game performance is VERY important...

These are the ones I'm looking at too, very difficult choice - Not even considering the Compaq at the moment - anyone think I should?

Dell seems to be $1444 shipped @ 15% off Small Business. Not sure, but heard of someone who payed only $1250 shipped and you list $1360 shipped. At nearly $1500, it's pretty expensive, the advantages seem to be 1600x1200 (4:3) native resolution. 20"

ViewSonic is about $969 plus $40 shipping from mwave, 1280x1024 (so 5:4) native. 18"

I do mostly 2D work with audio, and basic internet type stuff. Anyone think the Dell 20" is really worth nearly $500 more than the ViewSonic?

Compaq TFT8030 18" LCD

I have heard that this is the best lcd monitor for gaming. There was a big thread about your same question search for it. It should give you alot of info.

After running my Viewsonic vg191b for about a week, I can now safely say that I will Never go back to a crt. Its very Clear, Bright, and Fast. I am now running it off a Visiontek Geforce3 ti500 and using the digital connection, with the 21.85 drivers, and am Very pleased with the look and the performance of the unit. I too had the Compaq 8030 on my list of choices to buy, but the only difference in the 2 that I saw on paper is that the compaq states 20ms, and the viewsonic states 25ms. IMHO, the VG191 is a great lcd ;)

I am on the verge of buying the ViewSonic VG191B, but with the talk from the thread stevens linked too, I'm a bit wary. I want good quality 2D, no ghosting for DVDs, and would prefer to work at 1600x1200. This leads me to the Dell 2000FP 20".

I'm thinking of just going with that Dell 21" Trinitron (Sony G520 clone?) for like $569 and saving the extra cash for a Sony WEGA TV sometime in the future ;)

That is what i want to do but with the size of my desk i am probobly gonna get the P991 (rebagged G400). I think that lcd monitors are too expensive for the overall picture, because why get a $1000 when you arent gonna be satisfied when playing games or watching movies.

as you point out - if you want to save money: don't buy an LCD!

If you want to save space, your eyes, your back and gain resolution - do buy an LCD. You will definitely trade off some gaming performance for what you gain elsewhere, its not yet a perfect world!

Try a poll - how many would trade their LCDs back in for a CRT?

Who would admit that a $300 crt performed just as well as the $1000 they just dished out for their lcd?
No i am joking. I am not trying to say that lcds are bad, in fact if i could get one for free i would certainlt take it over a crt, BUT imho i think that i am going to get on the lcd bandwagon when they completely eliminate ghosting and get those prices a little well alot lower. I dont want my monitor to be almost half the cost of my system.

I did. But it was mostly because of the policy on dead pixels and I didn't feel like rolling the dice again.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. ;)

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one either. All indications are the major price drops are over. Big price drops were the result of a sudden excess of capacity after several big new TFT plants came on-line in Taiwan. You may notice that several tech indicators are now pointing up again - by all accounts the excess has mostly disappeared now and prices will fall say 5% this year compared to the 50% of last year. Also figure a lot of what is left to blow out will be the older tech stuff still in inventory. Those who want the killer next big thing will have to wait for it a) to be produced (and we've already heard that the latest innovation won't even go into production this year) and b) for it to become widley available enough for the price to drop again. Bottom line; 2-5 years for the screens you want at the price you want...

From another perspective - unless you are a hard core gamer, an LCD is one of the better investments you can make in your system. You get noticeable improvements in several areas instantly - much more difference in most apps than going from a 1gHz rig to a 2gHz rig, or from Windows 98 to XP, or to a faster hard drive etc...

I agree, spending money on lcd is money well spend, unlike cpu/video card, where u will likely to upgrade every 6mo/yr, quality monitor will last yrs in comparison!

however, I do see a drop in price for 17in and above lcd, when you see the huge gap between 15in $300/400 to 17in/18in $775/995, you should realize that the pricing structure in not balance! I think you would see 17in/18in price at 600 level and 19in at 700/800 for yr 2002~ imo

Well i would there are 2 lcds that i feel are very decent now, and one is the Veiwsonic one and the other is the compaq one, but i feel that i could spend my money in a better way than spending $1000 on an lcd monitor. I would really like to have one of those two but i would also like tp have a ferrari, but i dont think that will hapen any time soon. and i am not holding my breath at all for prices to fall, i think that in the next 2 years or so i will get one and i hope that instead of 17-18inch lcds being $1000-$1400 i would like them to be around 700 or 800.
