Just called Compaq to find out what speed athlon a friend of mines system can upgrade to and heres the response:

tech: "Oh..thats a 5838.. let me look at the specs... well that can at least take an 800 maybe more"

me: "Uh..well what is the max..is that written down anywhere?"

tech: "No....we just look at the specs of the system and make a judgement call... I could go ask one of the other techs what he thinks"

me: "uh..yeah sure..that would be great"

DEAR GOD.....

Hehehehehehehe Compaq.....what a pain in the a$$ experience trying to do anything to their bloody systems. I sent an email the other day, asking if it was possible to add a zip drive to one of their older systems that uses Cable Select (aaarrrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhhh!). Their reply: "We don't offer that option for that model". My reply: "Would an OEM ATAPI Zip 100 work, with the proper cabling?" Their reply: "WE cannot support non-Compaq items". WTF!?!!!!! I was simply asking if it would work :| It's not like its some radically different technology or something. Sheesh..... :disgust:

Oh well.....I never recommend any proprietary systems if I can help it.....

I've had nothing but good luck with them. The Li-Ion battery in my PDA went on the fritz. I called them up (last Friday), gave them my serial number, and a replacement was sent out. I was on the phone for no more than 8 minutes. The new battery arrived Monday free of charge.

NFS,

I'm not questioning that when things are broke they are good about it what I am questioning is someone in support who doesn't have the proper information and gives his best guess because he thinks he's an expert... he wouldn't have offered to ask the other tech if I didn't ask him if the CPU Max was written in a tech manual anywhere there that he could look up...

I recommend him the Compaq system when he was looking for a new system because of the price and the level of support he would get from them.. if things broke. So far the system has been perfect. He upgraded the Video card with a v5 5500pci that he got from the trading forums here and now he wants the new cpu. I tried going up to the webbie to find this information but after selecting the model number: "That information is not available currently please check back again".

He just ordered his 800mhz cpu and is pretty jazzed that he only spent 340 or so for 300 more mhz and a pretty bitching video card.

BTW.. which PDA do you have.. I've been drooling over the IPAQ for several months now....

I HATE COMPAQ!!!

I foolishly bought one for my parents. I took part in the $200 winter savings rebate last year. I sent the form and receipts and UPC's in on Jan 16. Guess when I got the rebate...Sept 23. 8 friggen months to issue a rebate. :| Well, at least I got it.

And yes, their tech support is run by idiots, also.

NSF4, what PDA do you have? Is it the IPAQ (I think that's what it is)?

OEMs have the worst tech support and customer service. The BEST support I have found is right here, I post a question, 30 mins later I check back and I have a collection of possible answers based on experience, and not some scripted manual that a 8.00 per hour flunkie reads.

Hell no I don't have an iPaq! :| Besides I'm saving up for my next system upgrade and iPaqs are about as rare as "genuine" JLH in the buff pics;) But as soon as the supplies fatten up and my computer savings recover, I'll have one ;)

But I have a Compaq Aero 2110 w/Pocket PC Upgrade
70MHz MIPS processor (iPaq has 206MHz)
24MB RAM
16MB ROM
16-bit color screen

Accessories I have for it:
56k Compact Flash modem
32MB Compact Flash memory card

A friend's Compaq stopped booting up after he added a NIC. I feel sorry for the guy; god knows how long his tech support calls are gonna take.

The 5838 Presario has an OEM variant of the FIC SD-11 mobo. I think it is safe to assume that it can support anything the "real" SD-11 board can. According to my Compaq information, it can at least support an 800 MHz Athlon.

I tried installing a full version of WinMe on my Compaq notebook. Could not find ANY drivers anywhere for the CyberBlade video. Called Compaq support.
"We don't support WinMe on our older systems." ( 4 months old )

OK, then where can I get the drivers for the video and other hardware?

"It's on the D: drive (which is blown away)
.
OK, where is the operating system CD so I can reinstall all your ComCrap?

"We don't provide it with the system. I'll send one out to you."

Which they did, and now I have all that ComCrap back on my system. At least its working.

Had I known that there was no support for the hardware they use, I would never have bought ComCrap. Never will again or recommend.
