My Aunt just received a Compaq for Christmas, I'm not near the computer right now to state all of the model info. But I think it's
AMD64 3500+
1 gig PC3200
Ati Xpress 200 chipset/graphics
Realtek Sound + Networking
The first problem I encountered when setting up this computer was that although it could access the internet, it could not access (or even view) any of the computers on our home network. Now, every other XP box can view and access files of the new Compaq, but the Compaq would either "not respond" or come up with a blank page whenever I tried to "View workgroup comps..."
I kept on playing with the Network Connections, the NIC seems to be working fine. But when going through the process of setting up a home network, it would always end with the Internet Gateway connection being disabled (with no way of enabling). Which left me clueless, but satisfied since the internet worked plus my Aunt has no use for network file sharing anyway.
But, the Compaq also seems to be having problems with our Linksys router (wifi w/ 4port + again don't know the model no. off hand). Yesterday the router needed to be reset in order to work with SBC-Yahoo's modem (which I assumed was just a regular malfunction after it being moved around/unplugged/etc...no problem). But today, my Aunt said she was having the same problem, and she had to reset the router even though the Internet and router was working fine for the rest of our networked computers.
So...after all that, if anyone could lead me through step-by-step to
A) get this Compaq working on the network, which might have something to do with the disabled Internet Gateway conn.
B) figure out if there's a problem with the Compaq and Linksys router that causes the internet to stop working until both the comp and the router are reset...
Thanks, first post over here at anand, hoping for some help.
