I can't say I'm very fond of Compaq desktops, but their server/workstation stuff is top notch, very high quality with good service and support.
Keep in mind they also own the Alpha EVxx line as well, those are extremely powerhouse high end workstation chips.

Compaq has lots of good stuff, just not their sh!tty desktops.

Compaq #1 in $hitty consumer products is what it should say! Yeah their servers might rock but their Presario Line should just not exist!

I had one of their Presario notebooks and wasn't that bad. The hard drive in it failed once (I had alot of warning tho), but other than that it was a good little laptop. When it started to become obsolete I sold it and bought a Thinkpad.

Just try and find drivers for it though! I have a Sony laptop, which I will admit, pain in the ars to get drivers for but at least I didn't have to tear it apart to get FCC ID#'s for the componites like I had to for a Compaq!

I never had that problem... it had a CL 128 sound chip and ATI video. It was all quite standard (for a notebook).

I'm not defending Compaq Presario desktops (which are garbage), but their notebooks seem to be ok (especially for the price).

I've only had experience with their consumer line and its BLOWs Goats and Chips. Worse type of computers I have ever seen.

I had a presario laptop, and I was never able to find the modem drivers on the internet (had to reinstall windows because the hard drive decided to screw all the file allocation tables) talk about crappy support...

I used to own a 486 90Mhz presario back in the Dark Ages. Basically every part was replaced because I had a wierd CD skipping problem. I was so upset they replaced the whole computer with a new penitum 90. I was pretty happy about that. :)

I havent had any experience with their consumer products, so I wont comment, but their biz oriented stuff is top notch all the way.

I have a Presario laptop and I am stunned by the use of standard components, HD, CD-Rom, Zif socket processor, many FSB, voltage and Multiplier settings, very overclockable and easy to change settings.
This is my first Compaq and I was surprised to say the least. (All motherboard settings are etched on the motherboard.)

Hate to burst your bubble but most new laptops are that way so your pile of Presario crapness is not all that special. Plus if they use such "standard" parts why can you never find drivers for them? And why does compaq NEVER EVER release drivers... a softpaq in my mind is NOT a driver... get out of the dark ages of proprietary $hit Compaq!

I haven't found anything proprietary on this laptop yet? what proprietary parts are you talking about????????
If you mean the motherboard, it is no more proprietary than my Asus P2B-f board.

How can you say they are not the drivers when they clearly contain the software that enables the hardware to work. Plus, a majority of the time, they are simply a self-extracting, zipped file that contains the same exact drivers you can download from the manufacturer. Last I checked, you could get Nvidia drivers in self-extracting form, so what makes Compaq so wrong?

I agree, why is a Softpaq not a driver?
Lame name indeed, but it surely is a driver, if you hate the name, or the fact that it comes from Compaq, so much that you refuse to use it, thats your problem, not Compaq's.

I've worked on quite a few Compaq's and never really had any troubles with them and the drivers/softpaqs are usually easy to find. The biggest problem I see is owners who FDISK/FORMAT and then go oops I can't get into the bios, my setup screen is gone...ect,ect...and they think the machine is toast.
Boot it with a floppy, reinstall the Diagnostic and Setup and install windows, sometimes some driver paqs (mine didn't need any drivers,W98 detected and installed everything) and your done.
I have a three year old Pentium Armada Notebook and I'm still impressed with it.
80MB's of ram
5.1 lbs. mobile mode
1 1/2 inches thick
3 Lithium batteries for about 11 hours use.
Removable CDROM/Floppy/H.D.
12.1" ActiveMatrix TFT
Transferable Tech support for LIFE
ect.

Their Armada line of laptops are fairly good. My company gives field personnel an Armada E500 standard issue. The screen is really nice and the unit performs well but I've been having battery life issues.

Ok, so I am a bit hateful of Compaq... yes a softpaq is a driver... Sorry! Working in a retail repair shop and seeing Compaq (presario mind you) system one right after another tends to put a bad rap on them in my eyes! Granted some of the problems had to do with USER errors but for the most part is was because the poor workmenship put into thier presario line (by the way I would send 3-4 of those laptops off to service a week from one location, and at one time we had 1500 waiting to be serviced... maybe they have gotten better over the last 6 months but I highly dout it!
