Compaq restore disk problem Create disks on another computer?

My typical 19 yo cousin, in college, bought a Campaq Presario v3000 last year and did not bother to create the restore disks. HD is in the process of dying, windows partition is crap but the restore partition is fine. Windows won't boot. I need to do a quick repair, can't really wait for HP to mail disks, I've searched but haven't found an answer ---- Can I create the recovery disks on my desktop machine?

I was able to plug the laptops HD into my system and when I tried to run the Recovery disk Creator it fails because I guess the disks are now P:and Q: instead of C: and D:. I need these now, any way to force a burn?

If it's Vista, use one of your own Vista DVD's to reinstall (the COA is probably taped somewhere with the cdkey) Windows on his computer. Download drivers from Compaq.

She is heading back to school in a day or two wanted to send it back with her. It's XP home, a friend might have an OEM disk so I can load it. If it was up to me I'd toss PCLinux on it and be done.
