Compaq R3000Z TouchPad/Trackpad problem

Sometimes my trackpad works perfectly, other times it just doesn't respond well... It has the ALPS trackpad drivers which are the first version (1.00.A) and they were last updated on 11-2003... Are their any newer drivers?

I was also curious is anyone has tried swapping in a synaptics driver, but... I worry about losing the scroll area on the right side of the trackpad.
