So I'm looking to upgrade from 256mb... by adding a 512mb module.

According to crucial's website, it seems that the R3000Z has two options.

I suppose some notebooks in this particular model take PC2700 and some take PC3200.

Are they any compaq users who've successfully upgraded their RAM?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Sweetness,
Mer.
PS: I've got the AMD XP-M 3000+ cpu.

I ordered this from Newegg... hopefully it will work.

Corsair 200Pin 512MB DDR SO-DIMM PC-2700 - OEM

I'll let you guys know.

Sweetness,
Mer.

*UPDATE*

Trust newegg to get the ram to me asap.
I received the ram today and installed it.
I have been running the laptop all day with no problems.
Success!!

question mel, does your hard drive make a lot of noises while searching?...it's really starting to bother me and i dont really notice it with my friend's other laptops...maybe this is just a r3000z issue or just my hard drive or something that an additional stick of ram might cure. any opinions will be appreciated.

Nope, my R3000z 60gb drive is very quiet. In fact it's one of the quietest drives I've come across.
More memory will certainly reduce drive thrashing during heavy operation but it's not going to make it any quieter.

exactly..it should be quiet but mine isn't. could it just be a bad drive? should i send it back? maybe it got jacked up during shipping.

Definitely. HP has a wonderful return policy, up to 30 days after you receive package. Just call them for an RMA, then fedex will come and pick it up even without a shipping label.

No my harddrive does not (and never did.. read below) make a lot of noise while searching.
I only have the 40gb harddrive.
In fact the notebook is pretty quiet.

I did have to get warranty service done on my original harddrive though.
I only had 256mb ram and was doing some intense video editing.
So I'm not surprised I thrashed the harddrive :)
I kept getting memory page fault errors... blue screen of death un winXP.
I figured it was either the memory, harddrive or over-heating CPU.

My 40gb harddrive crapped out on me... the bios harddrive dignostic said the harddrive was ok, but after it came back from HP the service sheet said harddrive replaced.

The notebook is running back now just fine with the 256mb+512mb ram and the new harddrive from HP.

BTW, the guy on the phone had an indian accent, but he was really helpful.
He took my info, gave me a customer service number and case number and scheduled a fedex pickup.

Fedex guy came with the pre-printed label shipping label.

From the time I had the laptop out of my hands to the time I got it back was 6 days!!

My only cost was re-packing the laptop up again ($11 box + bubblewrap).
My fault.. I threw away the original box.

Not bad in my opinion.

Sweetness,
Mer.
