Hello,

Yesterday, I went with my friend to a guy's place who is in computer selling business. He offered to sell me a Compaq ProLiant 1600 for $50 (just the CPU box).

- 512-KB second level ECC cache standard
- Intel Pentium III processor 600 MHz
- 384 MB RAM
- 19 GB harddrive

It has windows 2000 and I plan to load windows XP Pro and buy a monitor separately. All I need is a desktop. But if the above server can act as a desktop, I am thinking, why not go for it..

Just wondering if I am getting a decent deal here.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah its great. You'll love the proliant. I have two 1600s two 2500's and a 6500.
Find another P3 600 and use duals. That server will support 2 CPUs.

Its a dumb Idea to use it as a desktop, make some sort of server out of it.

It's not a bad buy *but* if you want to add drives or replace anything it will cost you an arm and a leg.
