Compaq Presario

NJLOAD

I'm looking at a Compaq Presario 5461 for a friend. It takes forever to boot up. The Win98 screen comes up and the desktop loads then the cursor turns to an hourglass and it takes forever to load. I think it had 64mb of RAM and I put an additonal 128mb in last night but still the same thing. There is nothing in the start menu, that I can see that will create a problem. The HD was defragmented and Scandisk was run and nothing.

Any Ideas?

Did you check the network settings? I've had computers take forever to boot if they're looking for an IP address or a DHCP server or something. Just an idea.

Captain4, thanks for the tip, some of the cards were removed and I bet one was a network card. I looked in the control panel under system and there were no errors, but I will check for any network settings.

Thanks

Boot up in safe mode (F8??) and then check system properties. make sure there are no duplicates or such (sometimes moving cards around causes them to install more than once).

Good Luck,
