I need input on reliability of HP/Compaq. As a computer newbie, still very much in the 'learning' stages, I need a company that provides assistance -- both in producing a good product AND phone help when I get stuck (as a non-techy, I can always blame the laptop, right? LOL). For those who are adept computer users, who would you recommend -- Dell, HP or Toshiba -- for someone who needs good service after the sale?

Great find OP -- fits my need for a sub-$1k notebook!

Everyone have a super weekend!

Edit: Is their CS toll-free and 24/7? Thanks for the help!

I have had great luck with my two compaq laptops and thier support. Always did a good job getting things fixed when needed, and the accidental damage protection I purchased paid off in spades when a cup of tea was spilled onto my laptop during very heavy seas.

Toshiba, OTOH, is notoriously bad in the PDA department. As for laptops, they may not be great either. Check out Brighthand discussions under Toshiba's e740 Pocket PC, and you'll see how ugly their support can be.

Basically you have to go through their "Academic Program" link on the HP shopping page, fill in your school details then when you go to shop the 5% is auto-discounted (it shows up as Employee Discount), the link for the academic page is https://eclipse.ebus.hp.com/dn/jsp/products_you.jsp

Then you apply the 10% when you enter your credit card info, it shows up before you purchase.

I originally wanted an IBM, but after saw this deal and checked it out I was very pleased, the prices on the IBM were killing me anyways :)

A few questions:

1. How do the Centrino CPUs compare to the P4s offered in other notebooks (1.3Mhz Centrino = ???Mhz P4)?
2. If I choose not to get the internal wireless stuff, can I add another brand later, or do I have to use a PCMCIA card forever(no 802.11g offering and already have Orinoco card)?
3. Does anyone believe it's necessary to upgrade the warranty?

1. Check out a random Centrino review from this site: http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.html?i=1809&p=9
Looks that about 1.5-1.6Ghz Centrino = 2.4GHz Desktop P4

2. You'd have to use the PCMCIA slot I believe.

3. For piece of mind I added the 3yr. Could add the 3yr damage protection and never have to worry about it; or take your chances, all depends.

Thanks for the link and other info.

On the fourth page of that link you posted, it looks like the mini-PCI cards can be removed. Can access be made to those of the Compaq? I know Dell sells some on their site. Anyone else know about this?

Very nice. But iIMO if you're gonna go first class with Centrino you really want a 64mb Radeon 9200...

6.5lbs is kinda heavy though the lappy looks very sleek; almost as nice as an IBook. For those who want the same power in a lighter chasis there's always the 5-5.5lb Dell 600m...

I'm interested, but somehow I can't justify getting one...

Does this thing have a mini-pci slot or not?

edit:
Nevermind, it does. I found the "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter Driver" on their site. Does anyone know if a different mini-PCI card can be installed later. I ordered one without wireless because I already have an Orinoco b card for home, and my work disables 802.11b on their 802.11g APs. Why would they not offer 802.11g on these things? I know the Centrino chipset only uses b, but the Dells can be upgraded.

"If you're a student, apply 5% Academic Discount (Use academic program entrance on main page)"

Is that only for college?
