Compaq Presario V5207NR Laptop $499.99 after $180 instant rebate. OOS online, but I found plenty in the NorCal stores I went to. Vacaville, CA Best Buy had twelve as of 9/13.

Celeron® M processor 410 (533MHz bus, 1MB L2 cache, 1.46GHz)
15.4" WXGA Brightview screen
512MB PC4200 DDR (1 DIMM, expandable to 2GB)
60GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 rpm)
8x DVD±RW/R CD-RW combo drive with double layer support
Built in 54g 802.11b/g WLAN
ExpressCard/54 PC Card Slot
Expansion port 2
6-cell lithium-ion battery
Microsoft Win XP Home
Graphics Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (up to 128mb shared memory)
S-Video Output
Altec Lansing Audio
2 USB ports
Included Software: Microsoft Works, Money, Windows Media Player; Adobe Acrobat Reader; Sonic DigitalMedia Plus; HP Photosmart Premier; muvee autoProducer DVD Edition with Burning and more.

I jumped on this because it was an instant rebate and the build quality impressed me. Overall it's a decent basic laptop for the money, IMHO. I've been browsing the web for 2+ hours and still have 40% battery left. Not too bad for a 6-cell Li-ion. Did I mention INSTANT REBATE.

Best Buy is also selling a similar Presario with slightly lesser specs for the same price, so double check the item number when in store.

Just be careful with the power connector. After having mine and my sister's Compaq laptops fail, I've made the vow "never again." Those things are soldered straight onto the motherboard with no reinforcement whatsoever from the case. Any physical stress to the power cable will gradually weaken the connection to the motherboard. After a year or so you won't be able to use your laptop without futzing constantly with the power cable. Another 6 months after that, it won't work at all.

How do the Celeron Ms compare to the Pentium Ms and Core Duo and COre 2 Duos? I'm assuming they are at the bottom of that list?

A similar one is onsale now for $449 with NO rebates. Uses the Celeron M 420 chip, has 512meg ram, 80 gig drive, built-in wireless, and 15.4" Brightview screen. Not a bad deal at all. Compaq C304NR

OOS on line, but plenty in the stores around here. A Co-worker picked one up yesterday.
