Hello,

I have a friend's computer from work, her hard disk died, is a compaq presario 5150, but the warranty has expired, I want to know if I can install any hard disk on this computer or I need to know the computer info so I can know which hard disk can be installed.

Any help appreciated.

If I remember right, some compaqs actually have there bios written to a hidden partition on the hard drive. This can be a little tricky but it can be done. Check with HP/Compact support if your computer refuses to post/boot after installing the new hard drive.

I have a Compaq 5100 (I think thats the model no.)

I just used a normal Seagate HDD on it when the original died. Popped in the new hdd, and used the recovery CDs...

Yup, I've had that happen to a client before. Cornelio, before you go to the store to get a new hard drive, make sure you can get into the BIOS with NO hard drive attached. Make sure that if you do get something up that it's the FULL bios. If the Compaq is old enough it probably has that stupid bios-on-the-hard-drive thingy. That shiite should be frickin' illegal.

I disconnected the hard drive, I can get to the BIOS without it, the hard drive is a seagate 8.0 gB and it says replace with a compaq spare drive, do you think it has to be bought directly from compaq?
