Hey guys,

I'm going to be exchanging to Japan for 8 months and am planning to take a laptop along with me. I have been looking around for a Centrino solution and the Compaq NX series caught my eye. They can be found for fairly cheap at Costco around where I live, but my greatest concern is reliability. I don't want to be looking around Japan for someone to fix my laptop in case it breaks down.

Does anyone have any experience with Compaq laptops? Are they reliable?

Thanks in advance.

A lot of people seemed to have bad things to say about Compaq in another thread, but they seem to get good reviews and a few posters liked theirs.

I ordered a Compaq the other day, for what that's worth.

I have the 1500t and it's quite superb. It's been a year and it has no dead pixels at all.

My IBM on the other hand, has 4 dead pixels already.

Also when talking about Compaq, the service in USA sucks while the service in Indonesia is superb. they will replace the lcd if there's only one dead pixel. So it depends...

I was wondering if you considered waiting to purchase your notebook once you are in Japan. They have many ultralights that are not available in the states made by Toshiba, Samsung, and Sony. Compatability over there would be assured and since you are more familiar with what will work in the US then you could buy a notebook and check it out for US compatability. I used my Amex card over there and got the best exchange rate which is not bad for the dollar vs the yen. Just something to consider.
