Guys, I need help giving advice to a friend who's thinking about getting a Compaq Presario SR1726NX system.

I've been hunting for specs and found out that is uses a ASUS A8AE-LE motherboard.
The question is what kind of PCI-e expansion slot this MB has. It doesn't specifically state a PCI-e x16 but the from the drawing it looks like the same size as a x16 slot.

I've adviced him not to buy a system with a x1 slot since he's then stuck forever with a useless port if wants to upgrade his video card.

The specs for this MB is here.

To give him more options I checked the SR1720AN system and it uses a MSI-7184 board and with that I think the specs are clear, it has a PCI-e x16 slot. Specs here.
On the other hand the SR1720NX system has the ASUS board.

Does anyone here have a clear idea what up with this?
To make it even more confusing the slots looks identical if you look at the pictures/drawings. Aren't the x1 and x16 slots supposed to be different in size!?

I really like to give give a good advice here. He can get the SR1726NX system with 17"CRT + printer for $439 and if it's expandable I think that's a pretty good deal.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!
A search for ASUS A8AE-LE doesn't show anything, it's not listed on ASUS's website.

Speaking from my own experience I wouldn't say Compaq/HP is complete crap. I had a Presario system running more or less 24/7 between 1999 and 2004 and not a single problem. That's all that really matters in this case. he's not going to spend time and money to upgrade and play games.

I suggest you take your flame posts somewhere else and let people who actually has any specific info regarding my questions post instead.

I'm posting this from a Compaq Workstation (Dual P3) which has been running for nearly 3 years now without problems so they must be quite good then.

I can also tell you that the slot on the ASUS is a PCIe x16 slot, capable of running any PCIe Graphics Card. There are people onlnie running X1900XT's on it

I knew there were good posters on AT. Thank you VERY much!
Do you have any links I could read about this? If you don't it's fine too.

I am going to go ahead and tell my friend that he can go ahead and get this system. Looks like a decent deal to me. I couldn't spec a similar system for less using Newegg.

awesome search! DeathReborn.

Frustrated User:
I apologize that I forgot to say on the other forum that there is rarely any 1x PCIe MB out there other than Dell..you should be fine with most of other prebuild system...

one thing to consider before you actually purchase the videocard is to check the power supply to make sure it has enough power for the specifc card you are purchasing..
x800/6800/7800 needs ~350 to ~450 watt ps
x1900/x1800 is a little higher.

The manual says the +5V line is designed to supply 2A for each board installed in the computer - how that translates to which video card to use I don't know.
The only reason he'd upgrade the video is if he likes to use a LCD screen and needs DVI output. There must be a low-end PCIe video card that can do that.

I really appreciate your help here. :D
