Our family has this machine, and it has some kind of scrambled video. It appears to have a vertical roll of sorts....not too unlike a TV.

The machine did this several months ago, and while fiddling with the keyboard etc. it just cleared up. Today, nothing will affect the rolling.

I bought a new battery because of the age of the original battery..about 4 years old...that didn't do it. If the machine is booted on the battery alone, you can only see a scratchy white screen with occasional flashes of color. If the power adapter is plugged in at this time, you can see the screens with the rolling effect.

It has been suggested that the monitor has gone west...being TV literate more-so than computer literate.. I cannot visualize how a monitor can cause rolling...unless it has something to do with an "inverter"?..whatever that is...just read about that feature last night on a site that sells screens.

If we cannot repair this machine...can the hard drive be used in a different machine?...say, a Toshiba?...there is one of those in the extended family and would allow the copying of personal data.

BTW, the Compaq runs nicely when connected to my CRT monitor, i.e. no rolling etc..
