Greetings,
The short version:
I migrated a motherboard to a similar case and put on a new OS (Windows 7), and now I can't run on battery power anymore (despite having three batteries, at least two of which are good). I can run on a power adaptor with no issue (though there's still a lingering burning odor from the lappy. I'm pretty sure I remembered to reconnect and screw everything back in.
I've also noticed that if I close the lid and the computer goes to standby mode, when it fires back up, the wire-fi seems to be disabled/can't see any networks.
The longer version:
I recently was given an old HP Pavilion dv5000 and a Compaq C300. Both were built around the same time on a darn similar motherboard. Alas, the nicer looking HP motherboard was defunct, and the Compaq worked, but had broken hinges that barely held the monitor to the body and was generally beat up.
So, I did what any broke ass computer geek with two jacked up computers and some spare time would do; tried to get what worked and cram it into one machine and make it work. For the most part, I was successful. The Compaq fit nicely into the HP body, though I also had to swap out the monitor as well. the only modification i had to make was Dremeling a few cuts into the right speaker's resonance chamber to make room for some jacks. Unfortunately, I made something smoke on a power on with the original HP monitor hooked up to the guts of from the Compaq. A little rectangular black thingie (perhaps a resistor?) was obviously partially melted on one side, and scorched a little bit of metal on the top part of the case assembly.
Fortunately, after that incident, the system would still boot, though a burning odor would still be noticeable if you leaned over and sniffed at the computer.
Any suggestions for how to get my notebook to run on batteries again? I've wanted a functioning laptop for a really long time for the portability and can't really afford to buy even a netbook. Anyone know a trick for getting my batteries working again?
