I need to check the motherboard in this laptop to see if the CPU is fried but I have never worked on a Compaq. Is there any trick to opening this case? Do you access it through the keyboard or do you simply unscrew it from the bottom?
 
Yes, you have to remove the screws on the bottom to loosen the keyboard.

Is it of the AMD variety?
Only the green Power light lit?
Leave it on in a laptop case?
 
Yes it has a AMD Duron and yes only the green light is on with no other signs of life. Sounds like you know a little bit about this model. I'm working on this for someone so I don't know if they left it on in the case but it is possible. Sounds like an AMD heat thing...unfortunately.
