Compaq Presario 6016US bought in 2002 needs a vid card update!

My friend has this system he bought in 2002...

Specs for his computer...
Compaq Presario 6016US

He wants to update the video card, so that the games he plays looks better. He knows it won't be cutting edge or anything. He just doesn't want to buy an AGP card that won't work in his system or that he spends $$$ on and his system can't even take advantage of it's speed. (Lame to buy a $200 card, when a $50 card would have the same performance on his system!)

I'm not that knowledgeable, but here is my best guess at Newegg...
APOLLO nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

Comments/suggestions? THANKS!!!

That is a 128 bit card. Does anyone know if a 128 bit card will work in this system? When he called their Tech Support, they couldn't tell him exactly what his AGP slot was, but they did tell him: 64 bit hardware configuration, maximum resolution 1920x1440@75 Hz

or does 128 bit work with 64 bit and vice versa?

eh, i've never heard of that before. The memory bandwidth of the graphics card should not have anything to do with the slot... I am pretty sure it would work.

Oh, so 64 bit is just the memory bandwidth? So does that mean his AGP slot can only go at 64 bit, so a 128 bit card would be overkill? Or it would still be faster for him than the card I picked out? Question then is, how much faster and is it worth the extra $$$ to him...

the 128 "bitness" of the card is just a link between the memory modules and the graphics core and has nothing to do with the agp slot, as i understand it.

What games does he play?

i didn't even go look at the game he is playing!

it's here...
Project Entropia

The PC you use to run Project Entropia must meet these requirements:
Run dxdiag to see your system information

Windows 2000 or Windows XP
Minimum 512 MB RAM
Minimum 1 GHz Intel / AMD CPU
Minimum NVIDIA GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics card
Minimum screen resolution 1024x768 (16 bit or higher)
DirectX compatible sound device
3 GB free hard drive space
DirectX version 9.0b, get it here
Broadband Internet connection (ADSL or better)*

Hmmm, looks like his system comes with 512 RAM, which is the MINIMUM suggested for this game...

512MB 266MHz DDR DRAM - 2 Total DIMM Slots Upgradeable to 1.0GB (DDR DRAM DIMM required)

I'll suggest that he upgrades, RAM is CHEAP these days. Vid card and RAM upgrade should both help his game play. But how much to spend on the vid card?

It has integrated video now...

Integrated NVIDIA® GeForce2? Graphics with up to 32MB shared system memory:

64-bit hardware-accelerated 3D graphics

mm maybe, i think a 5200 may be a bit slow though, seeing as the FX line suck at DX9... (doesnt fully support it). i think the 9600 non-pro, 128bit should be fine.

So the PRO is a little bit faster for ~$10 more? Or does it just have fancy options, which he'll probably never use?

I can't find the chart on Ben's that compares all these cards speed-wise...

1. Where will you find one?
2. Will it be used or new?
3. How expensive will it be?
4. No DirectX 9.
