Compaq Presario 6000 - need to slave the drive

A co-worker brought me his Presario 6000 that appears to be screwed up with either a virus, malware, spyware.....or all three. Can't get out to the internet, can't install anything and can't even run stuff in the Start / Accessories / System Tools folder (WinXP). Would like to slave to my p/c and run my AV.

Any suggestions would be great.

P.S. This is a laptop/notebook....not the desktop.

Is it an IDE or SATA drive? If SATA it can use the same power and data cables your desktop SATA drives use. If it's IDE you'll need a converter. Plenty on newegg ranging from 15-30$

I'll add and say that it also depends on the adapter the HDD uses. You'll have to see if its removable. Many manufacturers use an adapter to speed up their ability to connect the drive into the system during assembly. This adapter is almost always removable. You need to remove the drive and then remove this adapter if there is one.

If its SATA as my brother said above you can connect it directly to the SATA interface in your computer. Desktop and Laptop versions of SATA are identical. If the drive is IDE, you'll need a converter as they are different types (The laptop version directs power through the interface pins rather than a separate power connector).

If its IDE, you can get this for $2.

Now that that's out of the way. A second question would be have you simply tried booting in safe mode and installing malware bytes? Chances are, with damage that great, the OS isn't worth the time recovering anyways, and should just be reinstalled.

Thanks for the info.

Tried the safe mode approach but it sees an install coming and halts any attempt with some error messages. Would normally have just blown away the OS except they're trying to recover some data too.
