Ok, I got this computer from someone for free, after they upgraded.
I got it to my house, and plugged it in, and it doesn't boot. I don't get any video on the display. Hitting the power button does not turn it off again, I have to hold it down.

I don't get any beeps, but then again, this is an OEM machine, so I don't know if it has any speaker.

It's a P3 1Ghz in a micro-atx board, with four PCI slots. Two are occupied by a modem and a 10/100 NIC. Two SDRAM slots, 64MB each.

The CPU fan never spins, although it is caked in dust. When I force-powered it off, it jerked a little bit though.

The PSU fan spins, while it is powered on.

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with it, whether getting a PCI video card will allow it to work, or whether or not the mobo is shot. It wouldn't be a total loss, I can swap a micro-ATX mobo into this machine, and swap the PSU (if it even needs swapping). It only has 8A on the 12V, is that enough for a P4 2.8Ghz micro-ATX rig?

Edit: Removed micro-atx mobo from case, plugged into known-good 600W PSU, plugged in VGA and PS/2 keyboard, and I got it to boot! Progress.

So possibly, the old PSU bit the dust? (It is caked in dust too.)

Edit: Darn. In the process of removing the mobo from the testbench, the VGA connector on the mobo came right off. 🙁 So now I need to find a PCI VGA card. I had one, some years ago, I dunno where it went to though.

Edit: Miraculously I got the VGA connector back on, and the front-panel wiring was off by one, so the power switch didn't work. Fixed that, and now it's booting, all together. Does Windows ME support USB mice?

Edit: It appeared to hang after attempting to install a USB mouse. Unable to boot into normal mode, desktop never appears. Can boot into Safe Mode. Had to load WinRAR 3.80 on floppy disk onto the computer, in order to transfer pictures off before reformat. Using floppies, ugh. 🙂
