Hi all,

Does anyone have this machine? I'm trying to fix this machine for a friend of mine and I'm having trouble locating some of the drivers for it. I've been going in circles on Compaq's horrible web site.

The first problem is the video driver. The 4834 that my friend has is the one with the Rage 3D chip, but I can only find the drivers for the Virge chip (this machine was made with one or the other).

Please help, anyone...I'm doing this as a favor for a friend. Thanks,

Kevin

Are you sure it is not the Presario 4824? Because that one was made with the S3, then later another mobo with the Rage chip.

You should be able to call compaq and order a free replacement Quick Restore Disk. This disk will erase the HD and install everything from the facotry.

If it is the 4824 I have the QR disk for it.

Hey,

Its definitely a 4834 with an onboard Rage controller. According to the FAQ's on their website, the 4834 was made with either a Rage chip or a Virge chip. In the driver section, they only have the driver for the Virge and no mention at all of the Rage.

I would rather not use the quick restore cd cause I'm trying to upgrade to SE.

Maybe I should go to ATI's website? In system properties it says ATI 3D Rage Pro, but I cant figure out which driver to download on ATI's site.

Thanks for the help,

Kevin

maybe check the Presario 4824 section and perhaps they will have the drivers for the ATI rage there. Either that or buy a Voodoo3-2000 PCI for a upgrade and a fix at the same time.

Go to ATI
My son, who did not know any better, bought a Compaq a couple years ago, same story. The driver from ATI should work fine.

Hey all,

Listen to this. SE autodetected the card (onboard chip really) and installed the proper drivers for it. Way to go Windows! I'm just gonna leave it be...not gonna bother getting the latest drivers or anything. As long as it works, I don't care.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Everything appears to be working fine on the computer accept the modem which I can not find drivers for. Anyone know where I might find them?

Later,

Kevin

You should be able to find the modem drivers in the Windows 98 section that Compaq used to have in their support section.
