there is a $50 coupon from compaq, it also says something about a free 2nd battery and bag. Its direct from compaq

i'd probabyl recommend the $60 upgrade to the dvd, and $50 for the 15" xga at least. but yeah awesome laptop. weighs 5.7 pounds!! thats 2.2 less than a 15" screened inspiron 8200 or 2650

Ive been waiting for the 1.4ghz version since i really dont need the 1.6 version (lowest available through customizing it at compaq.com). The 1.4 retail version is supposed to be the 2805, but at CUSA they say it starts at $1800 so I'm really interested in this for $1400.

The only bad thing is that it has no firewire and instead uses USB 2.0.

Cool, they let you choose 1.4ghz now. Thats an incredible price for such a nice light laptop. But whats with starting it off at 128mb? Thats so little if its going to be bundled with XP. And the upgrade to the DVD/RW is a bit high. But still, i just paid $1399 (before $100 rebate) for my Compaq 1722 and the 2800 is much more superior for very little more. I do fear the incredible amount of heat the P4 chip produces and if you look at the pics of the machine on the compaq site you'll see it has 2 fan holes at the bottom of the case and one on the side so the thing will probably be super loud all the time with that fan spinning constantly.

Edit:
For the last 2 weeks then Best Buy has been advertising the 2800 with a $200 rebate (im not sure about this weeks circular though). Its not available at the store though. You have to go in and customize it with a salesdude and buy through them. I wonder if customizing it through BB or CC will allow for more savings on this cheaper model. I hope so because then i'll just finance the thing and get the warranty through them.

This laptop is thinner and lighter than Inspiron 8100, but how is the build quality? Has anyone tried using one of these before?

well this laptop hasnt actually shipped yet, it doesnt ship till the 26th so no one probabl yhas them. i've had a 1700T and those are built very tough. this is basically the replacement for that. the 2700 series (which is bigger) has gotten a lot of awards. Based on my experience with the 1700T which is about as thing and around the same dimensions, this probably has much better build quality feel wise than an el plasticy dell. compaq uses magnesium alloy on their thin laptops like this one, so it'll probably feel like its worth more.

looks pretty good... i think that buying direct from compaq is probably a better deal than buying through staples, even though there is a $200 rebate for purchase through authorized retailers (compaq doesn't count).

Buying through staples doesn't get you the laptop bag, or extra battery. Plus they charge you more for shipping ($75!).

after you select "built for you" on the first page once you select the presario 2800 option.

just click "personal productivity solution" on "select your category" .. dont use" select your components"
on the right

then click next. and click the left most one. $1449. you can customize that and add stuff. add the $50 off at the end to get the $50 off , the battery and bag

$100 rebate for 2800
I don't think the rebate applies for this. It specifically says the 2800US and 2805US and not the 2800T.

Can anyone confirm if the customizing at BB can take off an additional $200 with the rebate? If you can this will be HOT!! Also, this weeks circular doesn't have the 2800T in it.

Come on guys post em - hehe My father has to purchase one this week and am tired of looking for him!! LOL

teezle; yeah, looks like the $100 rebate doesn't apply.

at best buy and office depot, the cheapest i could get configured was about $1600 after tax/shipping/-$200 rebate. decent price, but too much for me. best buy won't give you the $100 BB rebate for the build to order laptops. the reason it's so high is because they won't let you go lower than 256MB ram and the DVD-ROM.

cheapest on compaq's site after tax and shipping was about $1550

Although this is lighter I would have purchased the Dell Inspiron 8100 for less money you get more bang for your buck.

I bought a Dell 8100 when they first came out and returned it because it was too heavy. So I decided to stick with desktops - LOL My father is going to Australia in a month, and needs a laptop for when he is down there. Since we do video conferencing, he really needs one with a good video card. Might go to BB today to check out the this Compaq.

Just remember that a P4 is weaker than a P3 laptop right now. And the P4 is not even close Mhz to Mhz to a AMD Athlon.

It takes a 1.8ghz P4 to equal a 1.3ghz P3 mobile. I have read reviews that show this. The problem most people forget is that the P4 has longer pipelines so it can run faster Mhz wise but does less IPC (Instructions Per Clockcycle). That is Why a P3 Laptop with a lowwer Mhz might still be faster than a P4 laptop.
And is also why a P4 mhz to mhz is Really slowwer than a Athlon XP.

But with a laptop make sure you look at the whole package. Just because it has a faster CPU does not make it better. See what chipset is uses, and if you plan on playing some Highend games make sure it has a good videocard.
Desktops and Laptops are VERY different creatures, so do your research.

I like the Sony Laptops with Athlon 4's, has firewire and a True Videocard.
And the Compaq with Athlon is a good cheap laptop if you don't plan on playing any heavy 3D games.

So don't buy a Laptop if it has features you are not going to use. If you don't game a lot, get a Duron or cheap Athlon with basic videocard, if you plan on gaming then get a desktop or crack out the big bankroll and get a laptop that has a GeForce 440 or the new Ati. The Cpu will not matter much as any laptop that has either of these Videocards will be fast enough to make the Videocard work well.

Just a little FYI :)
